SUNY Geneseo has named Julie L. Buehler ‘89, executive consultant at Mitrano and Associates, LLC, as the College’s new vice president for Finance and Administration. Buehler will begin as VPFA on July 25.

In celebration of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, the Buildings and Grounds Advisory Committee will join with Facilities Services and the Office of Sustainability to revive a college tradition — campus beautification. The effort kicks off with a Spruce Up Day, with plans for an Adopt-a-Garden program. The first Spruce Up Day begins April 22 at 3 p.m.

Austin Ainsworth ’19, from Honeoye Falls, NY, is a skilled xylophone player. He's also a late-night Dungeons & Dragons gamer, a former Pride Alliance officer, a budding recreational poet, and a genetics researcher — and he’s all those things because he chose to attend SUNY Geneseo.

Geneseo’s Department of Political Science and International Relations will present a special screening of the documentary “Who Speaks for Nature?" by Larry Engel on Friday, March 29, at 4:30 p.m. at the Riviera Theater in Geneseo. The documentary is based on a book co-authored by Geneseo Associate Professor Karleen West.

SUNY Geneseo is ranked No. 13 among medium-sized schools on the Peace Corps’ 2019 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities list. Currently, 22 Geneseo alumni are volunteering with the worldwide program.

SUNY Geneseo’s Department of Student Health and Counseling was recently designated as a Medical Home by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Centers (AAAHC). Of the nearly 4,000 higher education institutions in the U.S., only 17 have achieved Medical Home accreditation, considered by the AAAHC as the highest achievement for primary care.

SUNY Geneseo’s Department of Music will host a “unity-community sing” of Ludwig van Beethoven’s <iSymphony No. 9i/> on Sunday, May 5, in Wadsworth Auditorium. Volunteer singers will join the Geneseo Symphony Orchestra, the Festival Singers, Geneseo’s town/gown choir, and professional soloists.

Kathryn Hochstetler, a professor of international development at the London School of Economics and Political Science, will deliver this year's Roemer Lecture on World Affairs. Her talk, “Responsibilities in Transition: Emerging Powers in the Climate Change Negotiations,” will take place at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in the Doty Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Students in a spring honors course, “The Politics of Sustainability Through Art,” are exploring environmental concerns and the politics that affect sustainability issues in a creative way.
In addition to readings that provide background on climate change, food sustainability and other problems, students are viewing and discussing relevant artwork by artists from around the world creating their own visual art inspired by their learning. 

Evelyn Welch '19 has always been interested in the medical field, and chose to study biology and pursue a minor in human development to learn about the body and mind. She also loves to act, dance, and play music. She explored all her passions during her four years at Geneseo and found her career path along the way.

Leah Christman '19. an English literature and Honors Program major, has won a 2019–20 U.S. Student Fulbright award. She will serve as a Fulbright-Nehru English Teaching Assistant (ETA) in either a middle or secondary school in a community in India.

Nolberto Jaramillo ’21, biology, and Daniel Brush ’20, chemistry, have been awarded 2019 DAAD RISE scholarships to intern this summer in German research laboratories. Jaramillo will work in Erlangen, Germany at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität in the Bosserhoff Laboratory. Brush will be researching in Giessen, Germany with the Schreiner Research Group at Justus-Liebig-Universität.  

SUNY Geneseo alumni Mark J. Ashley ’77 and Joseph Carr will receive honorary degrees at this year’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18. Ashley is the co-founder and president/CEO of the Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS). Carr is a highly regarded fine wine producer, proprietor, and vintner.

Stephen Leone, a professor of chemistry and physics at Berkeley, will give the Jean Dreyfus Lecture at 7–8 p.m., Tuesday, March 12 in Newton 202. In his lecture, “X-ray Eyes,” Leone will discuss the broad realm of X-rays, from their discovery and uses in medicine, to science fiction and new experiments in the chemistry lab. A reception in Newton will immediately precede the event. Leone’s talk is free and open to the public.

First-generation Neha Marolia ’19 — an Indian American from Syosset, NY — began her schooling without a working knowledge of English. This May, she’ll graduate with a degree in English education and a passion for bringing language and literature to others.

A group of undergrads is staging philosophy takeovers in area schools as a way to introduce philosophical topics to high school students. The collaboration between Geneseo and local schools uses techniques such as The Trolley Problem to emphasize the value of studying philosophy.

SUNY Geneseo is hosting biological anthropologist Tanya M. Smith ‘97, Ph.D., for a lecture based on her recent book, <i>The Tales Teeth Tell<i/>. Smith’s talk takes place at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 2 in Newton 204. Smith’s talk will be followed by a book signing. Copies of her book will be available for sale. The event is free and open to the public. 

Leandra Marie Griffith ’16, a 2018-19 U.S. Student Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, provided a group of Belgian university students who were keen to learn more about the American political system, with a discussion on civics during last year's mid-term elections.

SUNY Geneseo Distinguished Teaching Professor of Psychology Ganie DeHart recently surpassed the silver anniversary of her longitudinal study of sibling and friend relationships. The ongoing observation of the same people over time provides rich data for in-depth insight on behavioral development.

Called “the most important thinker on intellectual property in the Internet era,” by <em>The New Yorker</em>, Creative Commons founding member and Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig will deliver the Open Education Week’s keynote address at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 6 in Wadsworth Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Michael Ruggiero ’12, an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Vermont (UVM), was recently included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Science 2019 list. In this Q&A, he discusses his research and the excitement he gets from being in the lab.

SUNY Geneseo’s Department of Theatre and Dance Studies presents the Geneseo Dance Ensemble’s Dancing the Liberal Arts in Keeping on Balance. The program will be presented in the Alice Austin Theatre, William A. Brodie Hall, on the SUNY Geneseo campus on Feb. 28 and March 1–2 at 7:30 p.m., and on March 3 at 2 p.m.

For the second time in the College’s history, SUNY Geneseo has been named a Top Producer of U.S. Student Fulbright awards, the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has announced in its annual article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Geneseo’s Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of three undergraduate programs in the United States to earn the American Physical Society’s (APS) Award for Improving Undergraduate Physics Education for 2019.

New Orleans-born artist Steve Prince spent Jan. 28 through Feb. 1 on campus in conjunction with the innovative interdisciplinary course The Art of Steve Prince. The residency culminated in a community art project called Urban Garden, on view in SUNY Geneseo’s Kinetic Gallery through mid-February.
