New and returning students and faculty are settling in for the start of the 2019–20 academic year as classes begin. The College officially welcomed new students to campus during New Student Convocation Friday evening, which included a keynote address by Monica Schneider, professor of psychology, on the commitment to community, diversity, and inclusivity students can find on this campus.

Washington Monthly magazine has again ranked SUNY Geneseo second overall among master’s universities for its contributions to the public good across three broad categories: social mobility, research, and promoting public service. To be at the top of the ranking, colleges need to “be excellent across the full breadth of our measures, rather than excelling in just one measure,” the editors note. It’s the seventh year in a row that Geneseo has been in the top five of their classification.

The fall semester is almost upon us, and students and faculty are beginning to arrive on the SUNY Geneseo campus in preparation for the start of the 2019–20 academic year with classes beginning Monday, August 26. Move-in Day is Friday, August 23, when most new students arrive on campus and settle into their residence halls. Upper-level students return on Saturday, August 24.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, SUNY Geneseo’s Women’s and Gender Studies program and the Livingston County Historical Society present Susan B. Anthony: Is It a Crime to Vote?, a one-woman reenactment of critical moments in the life of the suffragist. The dramatization performed by Christine Rausa will be on August 30–31at the Alice Austin Theatre.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded an $883,754 grant to SUNY Geneseo to support women faculty in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). The ADVANCE PLAN project will be led by Wendy Pogozelski, SUNY distinguished teaching professor of chemistry, and Karleen West, associate professor of political science and international relations.

SUNY Geneseo alumnae Hannah Hunter Chhan ’14 and Samantha Vell ’16 were both working at the Berkeley International School in Thailand. Together, they helped build a student teaching abroad experience in partnership with Geneseo's Ella Cline Shear School of Education.

SUNY Geneseo is to receive the 2019 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups in entering STEM fields.

A new scholarship endowment will memorialize Amy S. Janicki ‘13, who was a member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority at Geneseo. Janicki’s parents, Dennis and Susan Janicki of Cheektowaga, N.Y., and fundraising support led by Madeline (Maddie) Herrick ‘14, a sorority sister, established the $25,000 endowment.

SUNY Geneseo has again been selected by The Princeton Review as a "Best College" for undergraduate education. Geneseo also appears on their Best Regional Colleges list for the Northeast and 399 Green Colleges list.

The Department of Student Health and Counseling will open the new South Village Health Center in Onondaga Hall in Fall 2019. The center will provide easier accessibility to the students, primarily first-years, who reside on the south side of campus. It will complement the main Lauderdale Center for Student Health and Counseling, offering individualized primary and medical health care, reproductive health services, and a campus community resource nurse.

SUNY Geneseo has been named to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s list of the Top 400 Best College Values for 2019, ranking 96th on the comprehensive list of the nation's public and private colleges.

Geneseo students will provide more than five hours of free entertainment at this year’s Rochester Fringe Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, September 21, at the Lyric Theatre at 440 East Ave. in Rochester, performances will include music, dance, and spoken word. This is the festival’s eighth year—Geneseo has provided entertainment at the festival every year.

Professor of psychology Steven Kirsh combined two of his passions, zombies and psychology, for his latest book: Parenting in the Zombie Apocalypse: The Psychology of Raising Children in a Time of Horror (McFarland, 2019).

SUNY Geneseo has been named to Forbes’ 2019 “America’s Best Value Colleges” list, ranking 115th on the comprehensive list of 300 public and private colleges, up from 175th when Forbes first began the ranking in 2016. The College ranks fifth out of the ten SUNY institutions on the list.

SUNY Geneseo appears in the 2020 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges. Inclusion in the guide as a “best and most interesting” college is based on the quality of academic offerings and includes students’ social and quality-of-life ratings.

The SUNY Geneseo Alumni Association (SGAA) recognized three individuals — John Lombardo ’74, Chad Salitan ’09, and former athletic director Marilyn Moore — for their professional achievements at the college’s annual alumni reunion, a two-day weekend event that drew more than 700 alumni and friends to Geneseo on June 7 and 8. 

While studying abroad in the Netherlands International relations major Katherine Andersen ‘19 saw an exhibit at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum museum on the Dutch trade industry during the 18th century. It inspired her to research how women’s fashion evolved with the growing international trade in textiles.

SUNY Geneseo has named Costas Solomou, dean of undergraduate admissions and orientation at The George Washington University, as the College’s new vice president for enrollment management. He will begin his new position on August 8.

The Advancing Cultural Competency Certificate (ACCC) successfully completed its pilot initiative and will launch campus-wide in Fall 2019 as an opt-in program open to all SUNY Geneseo and Campus Auxiliary Services employees.

Geneseo’s student-led composting program finished the academic year with nearly 7,000 pounds of collected food scraps, paper towels, and other material — as much as the combined weight of two mid-size cars.

On May 18, SUNY Geneseo held its 153rd annual commencement ceremonies. More than 1,200 undergraduates received their degrees, along with honorary doctorates awarded to Mark Ashley '77 and Joseph Carr.

SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles recently assumed the role of chair of the American Council on Education’s (ACE) Council of Fellows, an elected position.

The Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena is abuzz with activity preparing for Saturday’s two undergraduate commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. An estimated 1,238 students will participate in the ceremonies.

SUNY Geneseo is among 123 campuses in the country — only 10 of which are in NYS — recently designated a “Voter Friendly Campus.” The goal of the Voter Friendly Campus designation program is to bolster efforts that help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process and develop a culture of democratic engagement on campus. This year’s efforts also resulted in the registration of over 1,000 Geneseo students.

Four albumen photographs from SUNY Geneseo’s Milne Library Special Collections appear in the National Gallery of Art exhibition <em>The American Pre-Raphaelites: Radical Realists</em>, on display in Washington, DC, now through July 21.
