Questions?

Algebraic Tricks for Evaluating Limits

“Additional Limit Evaluation Techniques” in section 2.3

What was/were the main idea(s) in this section?

Example 1

An example that involves simplifying a complicated fraction.

Put fractions over a common denominator and then merge denominators to apply limit laws

Example 2

An example in which multiplying by the conjugate is helpful.

Multiplying numerator and denominator by conjugate of numerator leads to cancellation

Example 3

An example that could be done either by multiplying by the conjugate, or by factoring. Sometimes multiple techniques apply.

Simplify a limit both by factoring and using the conjugate

Problem Set

See handout for details

Next

One-sided limits and non-existence.

Read “One-Sided Limits” in section 2.2.
