What is Student Court?

The Student Court of the Undergraduate Student Association of the State University of New York, College at Geneseo is the Judicial Branch of the Student Association, responsible for hearing cases and recommending action involving the Student Association Constitution, policy, election disputes, and impeachment renderings. All justices are appointed by the Student Association President with the advice and consent of the Student Association Executive Committee to serve for the remainder of their time as an undergraduate, fee-paying, student at SUNY Geneseo.

Case Process

When a petition requests the services of the Court for cases involving neither impeachment questions nor election disputes, the process will be initiated through written complaint filed by a petitioner with standing to the Chief Justice.
Written complaints must outline specific violations of policy, and outline the actions that the Court is asked to consider as a result. Within two weeks of receiving a complaint, the Chief Justice must present the matter to the entire Court for their consideration. If two Justices favor pursuing the case, then further hearings must be held.
After all relevant parties have been made aware of ta complaint that the Court intends to address, the Court must set a date for an informational hearing. One week's notice must be given to all parties, including the Student Association, if the case will be heard in an open session.

Steps for Petitioning the Court

Email the Chief Justice of the Student Court, studentcourt@geneseo.edu with a formal letter petition describing the exact nature of the case as well as recommendations for the court.
Letters written and submitted to the Student Court will then be reviewed by the Justices of the Court and a decision will be made on the standing of the petition before moving to informational hearings.
