Presidential Statements

Commenting on Political and Social Issues

When should higher education institutions weigh in on social or political issues?

As president of SUNY Geneseo, I and my cabinet are often asked to issue public statements on social or political issues. We have rarely issued such statements in recent years, and I want to explain why.

First, as a public institution, we cannot and will not take positions on political campaigns or parties. Second, although we recognize the power of public statements as a means of communication and expressing solidarity, those public statements can (and often do) have unintended consequences. We face these issues seriously and make mindful, collaborative decisions on when to speak out.

Using our mission and our community’s well-being as guides, SUNY Geneseo works hard to choose wisely the issues on which we decide to make a statement. This is because, as a respected institution in the community, the weight of our words diminishes if we comment on every cause presented to us.

Whether or not a statement has been issued, there is no place at SUNY Geneseo for acts of injustice, hatred, or violence. And we will always support meaningful and respectful engagement within our campus community.

Sincerely,

Denise A. Battles, Ph.D.
President
