GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo Music Department’s opening musical theater production this semester is the Tony Award-winning comedy “Company” with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth.

The production, often called the first concept musical, is on the Wadsworth Auditorium stage Nov. 1-5. The Wednesday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee begins at 2 o’clock. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for students and are available online.

SUNY Geneseo recently earned a national accolade for the participation of students who choose to study abroad.

Geneseo is ranked 26th by the Institute of International Education among all master-granting institutions and first among public master-granting institutions for the highest study abroad participation, through the institute’s Open Doors report. The Open Doors report is funded by a federal U.S. State Department grant and serves colleges and universities as an informational resource for campus internationalization.

SUNY Geneseo will host close to 100 area teachers on Monday, Oct. 9, as part of the first New York Teachers Summit. The event, organized by the SUNY System, is an extension of the TeachNY program, which aims to elevate and support the teaching profession.

Geneseo is one of eight SUNY campuses across the state selected to participate in the summit, which is expected to bring together about 2,500 pre-service and in-service teachers. Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and run through to 4 p.m.

October is Campus Sustainability Month at SUNY Geneseo and the college community is hosting a variety of lectures, workshops and hands-on events to raise awareness, spark discussion and promote personal involvement. Held every October, Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education, organized by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

Vincent Markowski, associate professor of psychology at SUNY Geneseo, was recently awarded a nearly $400,000 Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) research grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Markowski will use the three-year grant to study the cognitive effects of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the drug found in marijuana.
