A group of SUNY Geneseo undergrads is staging philosophy takeovers in schools throughout the region as a way to introduce philosophical topics to high school students. The collaboration between Geneseo and local schools seeks to emphasize the value of studying philosophy by recreating a college class, setting up thought experiments, and engaging students in discussions of ethical dilemmas.

SUNY Geneseo is hosting biological anthropologist Tanya M. Smith ‘97, Ph.D., for a lecture based on her recent book, The Tales Teeth Tell. The lecture kicks off the book’s North American launch. Smith’s talk takes place at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 2 in Newton 204. Smith’s talk will be followed by a book signing. Copies of The Tales Teeth Tell will be available for sale. The event is free and open to the public.

As longitudinal research studies go, Ganie B. DeHart’s work on sibling and friend relationships is in the midst of an extraordinary run.

DeHart, a SUNY Geneseo Distinguished Teaching Professor of Psychology with a specialty in child and adolescent development, recently surpassed the silver anniversary of her ongoing study, which started in 1993. For psychologists, the ongoing observation of the same people over time provides rich data for in-depth insight on behavioral development.

Michael Ruggiero ’12, an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Vermont (UVM), was recently included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Science 2019 list. A big fan of his alma mater, Ruggiero says Geneseo prepared him exceptionally well for an advanced career in STEM, crediting “a combination of intimate classes and a world-class faculty who has a genuine interest in students learning.”

In this Q&A, he discusses his research and the excitement he feels in the lab.

A student-led campus composting program has kept more than 1,000 pounds of plant and food waste from going to the landfill this month alone. Student interns from the Office of Sustainability have created a compost-collection program that includes distributing compost buckets to individual faculty and staff members who are diverting the compostable waste they generate during the day — such as food scraps from lunches and paper towels, for later use in other campus sustainability efforts.

SUNY Geneseo geology majors Megan Kopp and Alyssa DeMott are about to embark on a journey that is, well, out of this world — in more ways than one.

Kopp ‘18, from Brighton, N.Y., and DeMott ‘19, from Canandaigua, N.Y., will be joining Geneseo planetary geologist Nick Warner at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Nov. 26 in Pasadena, Calif., for the scheduled 3 p.m. ET landing of InSight, NASA’s latest mission to the Red Planet.
