Many things students learn at college are largely academic. Others are extremely practical. Some are life-saving.

Ethan Nagasing ’20, a chemistry major at SUNY Geneseo, is the chief of operations of Geneseo First Response (GFR). GFR is a student-run, volunteer organization that provides emergency medical services (EMS) to the Geneseo campus community and is an accredited New York State emergency medical services provider.

Isabelle Cirulli ’19 has received a 2020–21 US Student Fulbright award for Colombia as an English Teaching Assistant. Cirulli, from Webster, NY, graduated in December with a BA in Spanish and presently teaches Spanish in East Rochester, NY. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study or research programs, graduate degrees, or English teaching assistant programs in many foreign countries.

SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles is pleased to announce that Geneseo alumna Kerri Howell ’97 has been named chief communications and marketing officer, a cabinet-level position. Howell will begin her new role on July 9.

Howell currently serves as the director of communications and media at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, a position she has held since 2014. Before her position at SU, Howell was the director of public relations and marketing at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, also in Syracuse.

SUNY Geneseo prides itself on having well-rounded, civic-minded students who step-up during times of adversity. As the nation battles COVID-19, many essential employees and health care providers are going above and beyond every day. Kristen Bormann '15 and Nina Lurie ’19, both former student-athletes at Geneseo, are now fighting on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City.

SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles has been appointed as a co-chair of the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council (FLREDC). She succeeds former Monroe Community College president Anne Kress, who served in the role from 2016 until December 2019.

SUNY Geneseo is in the top 100 on Business First's list of the nation’s top public colleges, ranking 66th out of 485 four-year public institutions in the country. The 2020 survey results were based on academic excellence, affordability, diversity, and economic strength.

Among the SUNYs in the survey, Geneseo ranks fifth after SUNY’s four University Centers, the highest among SUNY’s four-year comprehensive colleges.

A hallmark for SUNY Geneseo is the undergraduate research opportunities that students like biochemistry majors Laura Williams ’21 from Pittsford, NY, and Wady Jacoby '21, Fairport, NY, undertake with faculty mentors. Approximately 450 students per year earn directed study academic credit for research, and up to 70 conduct summer research through internal and externally funded grants. Last year, more than 250 student research and travel grants, assistantships, and fellowships were supported by the Geneseo Foundation, Student Association, and endowments.

The State University of New York at Geneseo has invited 101 students into the college’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa this spring, prompted by their recent election by faculty members of the college’s chapter. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most widely known academic honor society. Students from both the junior and senior classes are selected each spring for membership into the organization.
