Jaramillo '21 and Brush '20 Earn DAAD RISE Scholarships

Nolberto Jaramillo ’21, biology, and Daniel Brush ’20, chemistry, have been awarded 2019 DAAD RISE scholarships to intern this summer in German research laboratories. Jaramillo will work in Erlangen, Germany at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität in the Bosserhoff Laboratory. Brush will be researching in Giessen, Germany with the Schreiner Research Group at Justus-Liebig-Universität.  

Honorary Degree Recipients Announced

SUNY Geneseo alumni Mark J. Ashley ’77 and Joseph Carr will receive honorary degrees at this year’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18. Ashley is the co-founder and president/CEO of the Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS). Carr is a highly regarded fine wine producer, proprietor, and vintner.

Chemist Stephen Leone to Deliver Dreyfus Lecture “X-ray Eyes"

Stephen Leone, a professor of chemistry and physics at Berkeley, will give the Jean Dreyfus Lecture at 7–8 p.m., Tuesday, March 12 in Newton 202. In his lecture, “X-ray Eyes,” Leone will discuss the broad realm of X-rays, from their discovery and uses in medicine, to science fiction and new experiments in the chemistry lab. A reception in Newton will immediately precede the event. Leone’s talk is free and open to the public.

Senior Spotlight: Neha Marolia

First-generation Neha Marolia ’19 — an Indian American from Syosset, NY — began her schooling without a working knowledge of English. This May, she’ll graduate with a degree in English education and a passion for bringing language and literature to others.

Undergrads Stage Philosophy Takeovers in Area High Schools

A group of undergrads is staging philosophy takeovers in area schools as a way to introduce philosophical topics to high school students. The collaboration between Geneseo and local schools uses techniques such as The Trolley Problem to emphasize the value of studying philosophy.

Alumna to Share The Tales Teeth Tell

SUNY Geneseo is hosting biological anthropologist Tanya M. Smith ‘97, Ph.D., for a lecture based on her recent book, <i>The Tales Teeth Tell<i/>. Smith’s talk takes place at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 2 in Newton 204. Smith’s talk will be followed by a book signing. Copies of her book will be available for sale. The event is free and open to the public. 

Fulbrighter Brings U.S. Midterms to Belgian Undergrads

Leandra Marie Griffith ’16, a 2018-19 U.S. Student Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, provided a group of Belgian university students who were keen to learn more about the American political system, with a discussion on civics during last year's mid-term elections.

Ganie DeHart’s 25 Years of Sibling and Friend Research

SUNY Geneseo Distinguished Teaching Professor of Psychology Ganie DeHart recently surpassed the silver anniversary of her longitudinal study of sibling and friend relationships. The ongoing observation of the same people over time provides rich data for in-depth insight on behavioral development.

Creative Commons Founder to Give OEW Keynote

Called “the most important thinker on intellectual property in the Internet era,” by <em>The New Yorker</em>, Creative Commons founding member and Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig will deliver the Open Education Week’s keynote address at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 6 in Wadsworth Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Dance Ensemble Performs Keeping on Balance

SUNY Geneseo’s Department of Theatre and Dance Studies presents the Geneseo Dance Ensemble’s Dancing the Liberal Arts in Keeping on Balance. The program will be presented in the Alice Austin Theatre, William A. Brodie Hall, on the SUNY Geneseo campus on Feb. 28 and March 1–2 at 7:30 p.m., and on March 3 at 2 p.m.

Geneseo Named Top Fulbright Producer for 2 Years Running

For the second time in the College’s history, SUNY Geneseo has been named a Top Producer of U.S. Student Fulbright awards, the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has announced in its annual article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Artist Steve Prince Inspires Community Art

New Orleans-born artist Steve Prince spent Jan. 28 through Feb. 1 on campus in conjunction with the innovative interdisciplinary course The Art of Steve Prince. The residency culminated in a community art project called Urban Garden, on view in SUNY Geneseo’s Kinetic Gallery through mid-February.

Farcical Madrid-Based Musical Runs Through Feb. 2

The Department of Music’s Musical Theatre Program’s latest production, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, runs this week, Jan. 30–Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. with an additional matinee performance at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2. All performances are in Wadsworth Auditorium.

Scholar-Activist Childs to Deliver Diversity Summit Keynote

Dennis Childs, associate professor of African American literature at UC San Diego, will deliver the Diversity Summit's keynote address. Childs’ talk, “Creating a Social Justice Centered Approach to Diversity,” will be held in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom at 2:30–3:45 p.m., Friday, March 1. A Q&A session with Childs will follow the keynote. The event is free and open to the public.

Over 100 Volunteers Honor MLK Day With Service

The College's intergenerational Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Leadership and Service drew 110 people including SUNY Geneseo students, faculty, and staff; seniors connected with the Foster Grandparent program administered by the Livingston County Office for the Aging, and high school students from Geneseo Central’s Leadership and Service class.

Geneseo Partners with Cuba’s Universidad de Holguín

On January 11, SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles and Rectora C. Isabel Cristina Torres Torres of the Universidad de Holguín in Cuba signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU formally establishes a working partnership that will provide Geneseo students the opportunity to study at the Cuban institution and effectively demonstrates the College’s commitment to offering students global and cross-cultural experiences.

Catalano ’20 Receives Gilman Award

Angela Catalano ’20 has won a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in support of her Spring 2019 study abroad to Costa Rica. Angela’s award makes her the 27th Geneseo student to win this State Department award.
