Geneseo Transfer Course Equivalency databank
If you do not see the institution or course you want to take, connect with your faculty advisor or the Office of Advising to learn if and how the course will transfer to Geneseo.
Prospective Students should talk with their admissions officer and utilize the Transfer Equivalency Self-Service.
How to Transfer Courses to Geneseo (current students)
- Identify the course(s) you want to take at another institution
-
- Discuss with your advisor, the chair/coordinator of the program, and/or the Office of Advising.
- Clarify which degree requirements you are hoping to meet (major, minor, general education, electives)
- When choosing the institution, consider that Geneseo has agreements with some institutions, so that your financial aid at Geneseo will cover the tuition for courses at those partnering institutions.
- Check the Course Equivalency Databank for basic information about course transferability.
- Make sure that you are eligible to transfer coursework to SUNY Geneseo:
-
- Verify that you have not reached the maximum limit of transferable credits. You may transfer a maximum of 90 semester hours. No more than 60 semester hours may transfer from a 2-year college - this includes any dual enrollment courses taken during high school.
- Repeat Courses:
- Financial Aid will only cover courses that you received an E in (sometimes D);
- Only credits transfer, not grades - credits will get you closer to 120 and can meet degree rquirements, but there is no impact on your GPA
- Pay attention to how many credits transfer in (ex: A college on a tri-semester system—a 4 credit course transfers in as 2.66 credits.) if the number of credits are important to you.
- You must achieve a grade of C- or better to transfer coursework to Geneseo. We will not accept credit for courses graded on a Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis at the other school.
- You must have an overall GPA at Geneseo of at least 2.00 in order to transfer credit.
- Submit a Course Pre-Approval Form before taking a course elsewhere to the Office of Advising.
-
- If the course is for general education or elective credit, use Course Pre Approval Form A and submit it directly to the Advising Office (Erwin 106) or email it to advising@geneseo.edu.
- If the course is within your major, minor or concentration, use Course Pre Approval Form B. You need to get the signature of the chair of the major, minor or concentration department.
- Be advised that the department determines what is transfer equivalent and how many transfer credits can be accepted towards the major, minor, and/or concentration.
Registering for an Approved Course
You will get a confirmation email from advising@geneseo.edu when your course pre-approval form has been approved. This email will explain the different ways to register for the course(s) depending on how the tuition will be paid.
Paying for your Course Out-of-Pocket
If you plan to pay for the course out-of-pocket (no financial aid support), simply register for the course as a non-matriculated student through the institution that is offering the course.
Using Financial Aid
Whether or not you can use financial aid to cover the tuition costs/fees for the course depends on a few things, but most importantly, the course must be taken at an institution with whom Geneseo has an agreement.
- SUNY Cross-Registration
-
In some circumstances, Geneseo students may be able to cross-register for courses at other SUNY Campuses. All cross-registration requests are processed through the SUNY Cross-Registration online portal, which you can access through your Geneseo student login.
Not all SUNY institutions accept cross-registration requests for Summer or Intersession/Winter courses. Please contact the institution to verify if they participate in Summer and/or Winter/Intersession cross-registration, or whether you'll need to register directly as a non-matriculated, visiting student.
Eligibility
- Student must be in Good Academic Standing.
- The course offered at the host institution CANNOT be offered at Geneseo during the same semester or a future semester.
- Exception: If the course offered at Geneseo is full and taking the course in a future semester delays graduation for the student.
- Student has exhausted the options of course offerings at Geneseo in the upcoming semester that will meet the desired degree requirement.
- Exception: if a student has an educational or career goal not met by the Geneseo course or if the student has an accommodation or medical concern not met by the Geneseo course.
- SUNY Cross Registration may NOT be used to graduate early. If you can reasonably meet the degree requirement in an upcoming semester at Geneseo, the request will be denied.
- Exception: if a student fell behind on credits and needs to take extra courses to complete their degree in 8 semesters

- You are responsible for notifying the appropriate offices on BOTH campuses if you withdraw from a course (i.e. the Registrars, Financial Aid, and Student Accounts). Failure to do so can result in a failing grade at the host institution.
- All course-related fees in excess of tuition are the responsibility of the student (e.g., lab fees)
- If you cross-register at a community college, you will be required to file a Certificate of Residency from your home county with the institution.

Please note that even if you have permission of the instructor and/or have satisfied all necessary prerequisites, you must still complete all registration processes required by the host institution to be considered officially registered in a course.

- Other Non-SUNY Institutions
-
If you are interested in taking a course from a non-SUNY institution, please schedule a meeting with one of the financial aid counselors to discuss the process (finaid@geneseo.edu; 585-245-5731)
A Consortium Agreement is an arrangement between SUNY Geneseo, your "home" school, and another NON- SUNY college/university (this includes CUNY), "host" school, where the home school will recognize your registration at the host school for the purpose of determining federal student aid eligibility, as allowed in Part 668.19, Student Assistance General Provisions and Part 690.8, Pell Grant Program, Codes of the US Department of Education Federal Regulations.
College/universities are not required to accept Consortium Agreements from other schools. If the Host Institution does not agree to enter into a Financial Aid Consortium Agreement with Geneseo, then the student will be ineligible for payment of financial aid funds until the courses are transferred back to Geneseo. Typically CUNY schools do not accept Consortium Agreements and require students to pay prior to registration. It is the student's responsibility to work with the school to determine what options for payment are available.
The Agreement is for determination of financial aid eligibility. It does not guarantee that a bill at the host institution will be deferred until federal student aid disburses at Geneseo. The Office of Financial Aid will forward a copy of the Agreement to Geneseo's Student Accounts Office. If there is enough aid to cover charges here, our Office of Student Accounts will forward the remaining aid to the student. It is the responsibility of the student to make payment to the host institution.
The student is ultimately responsible for payment of all charges at the host school. Payment to the host school MAY be due prior to the disbursement of your financial aid at Geneseo. The student should make arrangements with the host school for deferment of the bill.
In addition to being eligible for federal student aid, students must be:
- matriculated and active at Geneseo (students on an academic leave of absence or withdrawn for the term are not eligible unless it is your final semester), AND
- in good academic standing, based on Federal, State and School standards, AND
- enrolled at another Title IV aid eligible institution in coursework that is approved to transfer back to Geneseo for credit, AND
- the coursework is required for your primary degree program.
Application Deadline:
- Summer - July 31
- Fall - September 1
- Spring - February 1
