Advising Resources for Commuting Students
Geneseo is a residential campus, which means that most resources are communicated with the assumption that students live on campus for at least part of their academic career. Below are a list of resources (and offices to connect with if you need more!) to help commuting students feel like they belong on campus.
It's important to schedule yourself time on campus to access and visit resources in person. Don't just think about your course schedule when finalizing commuting hours - think about tutoring hours, learning center hours, professor office hours, office workday hours, health services, etc.
- Scheduling Needs
-
- On your course registration survey, make sure you indicate your unique days and times needed as well as where you have flexibility!
- If you are registered for classes that make commuting difficult, please connect with the Office of Advising to troubleshoot and come up with a plan.
- If you are a returning student and are having trouble finding major or minor courses that can accommodate your commuting schedule, meet with your faculty advisor or the Chair of the program department to see what's possible.
- Tutoring, Learning Centers, and Office Hours
-
Remember that these services are not only for students who are struggling in courses. In fact, they are most effective when utilized proactively. Since these are peer-support resources, the offerings usually don't start until after add/drop period has ended.

- You can also make appointments for AOP Tutoring and the Writing Learning Center tutors through Navigate.
- STAR NY Tutoring is a SUNY-wide online tutoring service that covers most introductory disciplines.
- If you need tutoring support for upper-level courses, especially 300 and 400-level courses, connect with your instructor, advisor, and/or department chair for suggestions - each department is different!
- Office Hours can sometimes be tricky for commuting students - check your syllabi as soon as you can and work with your instructor if the days and times don't work with your commuting schedule.
- The Office of Advising does not run content tutoring, but we are available (in person and online) to help identify barriers to commuting students that are impacting success and we can work with you to help build a plan.Stop by or set up an appointment at any time.
