One-on-One Academic Support
In addition to the full-time and part-time advisors in the office, the Office of Advising supports and trains faculty, students, and staff from across campus to support academic success in a variety of ways:
- Academic Coaching
-
Academic Coaches are faculty and staff members from departments across campus who support students who are on Academic Probation in their academic recovery. This is intended to be a 1- or 2-semester relationship that builds new habits that lead to student success.
Students reflect on strengths and identify opportunities for growth with their Coach and then put those new behaviors into practice.
Academic Coaches meet at least twice a month with their students and are trained to:
- Serve as accountability partners
- Introduce students to study techniques that will deepen their learning
- Guide students to set SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely) goals to achieve success
- Support students in developing positive time management habits
- Foster confidence in students to address personal barriers to success and make referrals to other campus supports as needed
Description: This support role focuses on changing specific, self-identified, student behaviors that are harming academic success. A coach's goal is to help the student identify 1-2 strategies that will improve outcomes, develop a plan of action with the student, and then serve as an accountability partner for that plan for the semester.
- Academic Champions
-
Academic Champions are faculty and staff members from across campus who support students early in their career at Geneseo. The transition to college is difficult for everyone and the Champion Program is designed to connect students to someone who will learn about each student's unique experience and guide them through campus life.
Students reflect on their 1st few semesters at Geneseo and identify successes and challenges that can guide their trajectory through Geneseo.
Academic Champions meet at regularly with their students and are trained to:
- Provide space to listen to students' unique journeys
- Reflect back what they are hearing
- Assist the student in identifying barriers they are experiencing and troubleshooting solutions
- Help students identify resources and support systems on campus and in the community
Description: This role is for faculty and staff interested and skilled at connecting with students, trust-building, and listening to and understanding all the obstacles impeding academic success at Geneseo. The goal of this relationship is to learn about the student's unique experience and then develop a holistic and multiple semester academic plan and accountability structure to address the obstacles.
- Geneseo Points of Service (GPS) Guides
-
GPS Guides are faculty and staff from across campus that serve as real-time Q&A support for students. They have signs outside their office and are expecting visitors with random questions! You can also Raise your Hand in Navigate and choose "I have a question" to connect with a GPS Guide.
GPS Guides are trained to:
- Normalize help-seeking behaviors! It's healthy to ask questions and to not know things.
- Learn about the wide variety of campus resources, what they do, and how to connect students to them.
Description: Oftentimes, students aren’t seeking support staff offices because they don’t know the office exists, they don’t know what the office is called or who in the office/dept they need, or they are intimidated by the people or office structure. GPS Guides work to break down these obstacles by being visible, present, and friendly. These are faculty and staff who know about campus services and are interested in engaging with students and learning more. They are available if students have a question about where to go or how to do something.
