Transcendental Functions
What are they? Why all the fuss?
“Algebraic” functions: built from addition,
multiplication, etc.; definitions tell you how to calculate
the function
f(x) = x2
f(x) = x + 3
Transcendental: not calculable in terms of addition, multiplication,
etc. (at least not finitely), definition doesn’t tell you
how to calculate (other than maybe what button to push on a calculator)
g(x) = sin x, other trig, inverse trig
Logarithms, general exponentiation
