Past Events:
Fall 2024
ImageOur first meeting as a resurgent club, dormant since 2019. We watched the film Get Out by Jordan Peele and discussed the film's themes and character's interactions with one another.
This discussion, headed by Professor Reece Torres focused primarily on the theory of dramaturgy elaborated by Erving Goffman, and the ways in which W.E.B. Dubois' double consciousness explains the behavior of the main character, Chris Washington, as a black man in a white, exploitative environment.
ImageOur second meeting was a registration aid workshop centered around the Department of Sociology, where we discussed what courses were available in the Spring 2025 semester, how faculty teaching styles differed, and how a major and minor in sociology could be structured.
ImageOur third meeting was a less structured open forum, where attendees brought their current research and term papers to give critiques and show their unique sociological interests, while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate!
Spring 2025
ImageFor our first meeting of the spring 2025 semester, we hosted another movie watching event, this time on The Hunger Games by Gary Ross, focusing on the concept of the functioning of a dystopian society.
This discussion, headed by members of the Eboard, took a Marxist perspective, and focused on the various ways that the government of Panem uses visual and verbal cues to maintain control over its exploited population through the theories of the culture industry posited by Theodor Adorno and the colonization of the lifeworld explained by Jürgen Habermas.
