Residence Director - CLOSED for the 2024-25 Academic Year

The Department of Residence Life is seeking graduate students to serve as team members for the Department of Residence Life as Residence Director. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and be enrolled in a graduate program or have planned involvement in an advanced educational opportunity. Experience as a member of a residence hall staff is preferred and candidates should indicate an interest in and understanding of student development and learning.

The Residence Director is a member of the professional staff who, along with an undergraduate Assistant Residence Director (ARD), will be responsible for the students and RA staff of a residence hall. General duties and responsibilities (20 hours per week) will include administration of a residence hall, staff development, community development and educational initiatives, meeting attendance, crisis and emergency response in the “on-call” duty rotation, and participation in department wide initiatives. The Residence Director is obligated to live in the provided apartment.

Position Compensation

Stipend of $12,000 per year

Community Development & Educational Initiatives

Be visible and accessible to students who live in residence hall
Serve as a resource for Hall Council and Assistant Residence Director (secondary advisor)
Maintain hall programming budgets (RA, hall council, staff development) and track programming in residence hall
Be a resource to RAs and assist in the development of programs to meet intended learning outcomes and goals
Productively address all student concerns and roommate conflicts in residence hall.


Staff Development

Supervise and evaluate RA staff each semester
Conduct weekly staff meeting (1 hour)
Conduct weekly individuals with RA staff (3 hours)
Active participation in training of RAs through presentations (prior to start of classes)

Title: Residence Director (RD), Department of Residence Life at SUNY Geneseo

Reports To: Area Coordinator and indirectly to an Assistant Director

Specific Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree; enrollment in a graduate program or have planned involvement in an advanced educational opportunity; residence hall staff experience preferred; organizational skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills; teamwork orientation; ability to work within budgets; understanding of student development and residential facilities management.

Terms of Employment: Start date begins August 1, 2024 through May 31, 2025. When classes are in session, work is not to exceed 20 hours per week. This position is a live-in position requiring extensive training, evening work and weekend time commitments at times. It is expected that the Residence Director (RD) serve in an “on-call” duty rotation.

General Duties & Responsibilities

Administration of Residence Hall

Maintain 10 scheduled office hours per week. During this time the RD may take care of the tasks listed below.

Manage, coordinate, and attend all aspects of designated hall openings and closings (beginning and end of semester and holiday closings)
Oversee room and key inventories for residence hall (primarily beginning and end of semester)
Handle all related tasks to hall management (damage billing, occupancy reports, etc.; periodic)
Assist with staff and housing selection (occurs in the spring)
Serve as a resource to all students in residence hall
Meet with residents

What are the Qualifications for the RA Position?

  • Applicants must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits
    • Applicants must report at least a 2.5 Fall 2024 GPA at the time of application 
    • Applicants must also receive at least a 2.5 GPA for the Spring 2025 semester
  • Applicants must be in good conduct standing and not have current conduct sanctions
  • Applicants must have completed one semester at SUNY Geneseo by the end of the Spring 2025 semester
  • Applicants must have lived in on-campus at least one semester at any college or university by the end of the Spring 2025 semester
  • Applicants must not hold a full-time position elsewhere, be a student teacher, hold a full-time internship, or hold an executive board position with Student Association while serving as RA
    • The positions that are not eligible for employment as student staff employees in the Department of Residence Life (because both positions are intense and require a high rate of attention and commitment) are SA President, Director of Business Affairs, SA Vice President, and Director of Inter Residence Affairs. 

    • Regarding other SA Executive positions, as long as their commitment to SA is less than 10 hours per week, they can be RAs. 

  • Applicants must be enrolled in at least 12 credits, but no more than 18 credits without department approval

Duration of Position:

  • August 8, 2025 - May 18, 2026 (after May Commencement) [subject to change based on the academic calendar]

RA Compensation:  

  • $200.00 meal plan allocation per semester
  • $250.00 stipend per semester

Summer Resident Assistant Position 2024

Summer Resident Assistant Job Description

Time of Service 
May 18, 2024 - August 18, 2024

Criteria
Summer Resident Assistants must be registered as a full-time Geneseo student for Fall 2024. Current RAs are the preferred candidates for this position.

Job Requirements
Summer Resident Assistants (Summer RAs) work on campus assisting summer school students and the Department of Residence Life.  This list is not exhaustive.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Ensuring the welfare of summer session students, including facilitating check-in and check-out of the residence hall, monitoring residents’ safety, health, and wellbeing, documenting incidents, filing facilities and maintenance requests, creating community programing, and communicating information from the department and College.
  • Assisting the Department of Residence Life with clerical duties, approximately five hours each week during business hours (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.).  
  • Serving on a weekly duty rotation and handling emergency concerns for the residential community.
  • Attending staff meetings and project meetings.
  • Overseeing the state of summer residence hall, ensuring that all facilities are neat, welcoming, and clutter-free.
  • Acting as a community ambassador.  This includes being visible on campus, answering questions, and providing direction to any campus guests and community members if any summer programming occurs.  
  • Supporting the Assistant Director of Housing Operations with damage billing appeals and new student housing placement.  
  • Supporting the Assistant Director of Housing Operations with key and occupancy management for summer residence hall use.  
  • Participating in training and development initiatives when applicable.

Summer Resident Assistant Opportunities
Summer Resident Assistants will present a united front and will work together to accomplish the goals of the summer.  Our most important goal and crucial goal is the safety of our summer residents.  Secondary to resident safety is office support for the Department of Residence Life.  Other projects will include opportunities to assist in departmental presentations, Move-In Volunteer program implementation, RA Training involvement, Staff Manual input, Social Media engagement, Office support, and Housing Operations assistance.   
    
Time Requirements: Summer Resident Assistants work part time throughout the summer and may enroll summer courses during each summer session.  It must be understood that although the work is part time, workload will not be reduced to accommodate an academic load or another job.

Time Off: Summer Resident Assistants may take time away from campus, with permission from their supervisor.

Compensation: 
Summer Resident Assistants receive a single room within a residence hall.
Summer Resident Assistants receive a salary of $1,950.00 for work done over the summer.
 

Supervised by an Area Coordinator.
