Pre-Med/Pre-Health Experience

Healthcare professional schools are looking to admit students that have a sincere, sustained health related experience. This experience not only ensures that you know what you are getting yourself into, but is demonstrating that as a healthcare provider, you are service and people oriented. A few of the common ways that Pre-Med/Pre-Health students obtain clinical experience is through:

• Shadowing: short term, observational opportunity to get a glimpse of a specialty of medicine. This is a great opportunity to ask questions to learn more about the profession. Building a relationship with the medical professional can lead to a mentoring relationship.
• Volunteering: opportunity to provide a service in a medical care setting. This is a great opportunity to become part of the community in a medical care setting.
• Work Experience: experience in a related health profession (i.e. scribe, CNA, LPN, phlebotomist, etc.) is a great way to gain exposure to healthcare professions. Again, a great opportunity to become part of the community in a medical care setting.

SUNY Geneseo students are responsible for arranging their own clinical experiences. Most often, students will make arrangements during the summer months as it does not conflict with their rigorous course schedule.
