Policy on 300- or 400-level transfer credit
Department of Global Languages and Cultures Policy on 300- or 400-level transfer credit
- Due to our carefully crafted curriculum designed to ensure that students get a well-rounded education, we strongly discourage students from taking advanced courses at other institutions.
- Due to the intensive nature of intersession / summer online courses, we do not feel that students have the time to acquire and practice the required skills as outlined in our program learning outcomes.
- We do realize that it may be necessary to make an exception to this rule if it prevents a student from graduating. To this end, we will allow students to transfer ONE (1) 300- or 400-level course if they meet the following criteria:
- The student is a graduating senior and would be required to return to Geneseo for an additional semester to take only one course in Spanish, French or German.
- The student must have an overall 3.3 GPA or higher.
- The student must have taken at least SPAN / FREN / GERM 301 prior to enrollment.
- If the course deals with any literary content, they must have taken SPAN / FREN / GERM 301 and SPAN / FREN / GERM 302 prior to enrollment.
- If the course deals with linguistics, they must have taken SPAN / FREN / GERM 301 and SPAN 323 or 424 or FREN 317 or FREN 423 prior to enrollment.
If a student meets these criteria, they must submit a detailed syllabus that includes the following at least one month prior to the start of the course:
- Course description for the term that they will take the course. Syllabi from prior semesters/terms will not be accepted.
- An explanation of how students will be evaluated (grade components, etc.)
- A course calendar and a list of topics and assignments, including what type of assignment it is and how the five skills will be assessed (reading, writing, listening, speaking, cultural competence).
- How the class will be taught (asynchronous or synchronous)
It is up to the Department faculty to determine if:
- a course can be considered an equivalent of a 300- or 400-level course at Geneseo.
- a student is prepared for the course.
All decisions will be made in the best interest of the student.
