Julie Buehler '89
Julie Buehler ’89 joined Geneseo as vice president for finance and administration in July of 2019. As vice president, she oversees campus budgeting, financial planning, bill payment, risk management, support of hiring, employee engagement, payroll, benefits, access to resources, facilities, compliance, union relations, grant and program administration, sustainability, restaurants, and cafés. She is often engaged in campus-wide strategic planning and policy considerations.
Julie previously served as an executive consultant at Mitrano and Associates, LLC, specializing in services for higher education and not-for-profits. Prior to her consulting engagement, Buehler served for five years as a vice chancellor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the state’s public flagship with over 20,000 students. During her tenure she built the financial plan for, and led broad teams which successfully implemented over $30m in network improvements and delivered a $12 million data center on time, budget and scope. She also brokered multiple corporate donations for the campus including a $3M+ technology gift and an $1.5M equipment gift.
Julie embarked on her higher education career at the University of Rochester (UR) in Rochester, NY. During two decades of UR service she held various leadership roles of increasing responsibility. She was often invited to lead complex initiatives. From 2009-2012 she co-chaired the budgets and planning working group for the Health Sciences Center for Computational Innovation start-up. She orchestrated the development of financial models in support of this three-way $100 million supercomputing research collaboration with the University, IBM and state of New York. Her UR roles included deputy chief information officer, director of information technology planning, finance, and administration; project manager for human resources systems replacement; manager of financial systems operations; and auditor.
Julie is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Masters in Business Administration. She was an American Council on Education Fellow in 2010-11. Throughout her career Julie has served on multiple not-for-profit Boards and Councils. She recently completed service as treasurer for the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) Board and is currently serving on the Campus Auxiliary Services and Livingston County Chamber of Commerce Boards.
Julie has a passion for mentoring and organizational development. She is active in multiple community-based initiatives and enjoys outdoor activities and appreciating nature with her family in the Finger Lakes region of NY and beyond.
