At the 47th Phi Beta Kappa Society's (PBK)Triennial Council Meeting in Baltimore this summer, SUNY Geneseo's chapter, Alpha Delta of New York, was honored with a Certificate of Recognition from the national organization.
The recognition applauded Geneseo's "enduring commitment to furthering the liberal arts and examining barriers to PBK membership." The college covers society fees for students with financial hardships and has one of the highest induction rates for a public university. The Alpha Delta chapter celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year.
The national organization also noted the college chapter's holistic review of students that "emphasizes student commitment to the liberal arts," not just their grade point average (GPA). The college's chapter also holds the annual Phi Beta Kappa Colloquium and Lecture and serves as a host for the Visiting Scholars program.
"I was delighted to accept the award on behalf of our chapter," said Sherry Larson-Rhodes, research instruction librarian and vice president of Geneseo's Phi Beta Kappa chapter, who attended the council meeting. "It's very affirming that Phi Beta Kappa National recognizes the hard work that the chapter does to promote PBK to the campus community, especially the work of the Membership Committee, which goes far beyond just looking at a student's GPA to identify potential PBK student-candidates whose work exemplifies the pursuit of knowledge & love of learning."
