Maker Space Network

Maker Space Network

The Maker Space Network is an initiative that connects students with a wide array of spaces, on campus that allow for creative, hands-on pursuits and with practitioners with skills and expertise to share. Spaces range from 3D printing and video editing labs to painting and mixed media studios. Workshops this semester will include crochet and knitting, collage, power tool and wood construction basics, 3D printing and more. The aim is to balance self-guided access to spaces and projects with skill-sharing workshops.

The Rationale for the Maker Space Network initiative is multi-fold.

  • First and foremost it is designed to give students the opportunity to develop, utilize and share hands-on skills, and to participate in self-guided creative pursuits.
  • It broadens the reach of existing campus assets to a wider audience of users.
  • It creates a space that fosters community, collaboration and connection with others.
  • It provides a creative outlet that has been shown to provide significant mental health benefits.
  • It helps to develop the mind body connection that comes with the physical manipulation of materials and ideas that bring new things into existence.
