FAFSA Completion Corps
SUNY Geneseo's FAFSA Completion Corps Initiative
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an essential step for college students seeking federal financial aid. However, the process can be intimidating, particularly for those unfamiliar with financial aid procedures. In addition, New York State offers its own financial aid programs that require separate applications, adding to the challenges for both new and returning students. To address these issues, SUNY Geneseo’s Office of Financial Aid has employed two upperclassmen to serve as SUNY FAFSA Completion Corps members. Their role is to assist students in navigating these applications and enhance the overall completion rates.
The SUNY FAFSA Completion Corps initiative is a program launched by the State University of New York (SUNY) to help prospective students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The initiative was made possible by a nearly $300,000 grant from AmeriCorps. The program aims to increase the number of students who complete the FAFSA, thereby helping them access federal and state financial aid.
The initiative involves training students from six SUNY campuses to assist their peers and community members in navigating the FAFSA application process. By providing this support, the FAFSA Completion Corps hopes to ensure that more New Yorkers can take advantage of financial aid opportunities and achieve their educational goals.
The program is part of a broader effort to make higher education more accessible and affordable for students across New York State. SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that more than half of SUNY undergraduates attend tuition-free thanks to state and federal financial aid.
