Submitted by Kristen Hoffman Baetzhold '92 (mom): "Our family's Geneseo legacy means a great deal, for without my parents having met at Geneseo, none of us would be here! "My grandparents have always been my biggest supporters in life. Throughout every concert, every game, every scout meeting and so on, they were there for me. They also happened to be the first ones to plant the seed for the idea of going to Geneseo. My Grandfather was a history teacher and I was interested in doing just that as well. Naturally, Geneseo had to be my choice, but they gave me the first push."

Submitted by Jen Prusinowski '94: "Geneseo is a very special place for our family. Not only did Dave and I meet at Geneseo, but we also made our closest lifetime friends there. Our children grew up visiting Geneseo often and hearing about our love of all things Geneseo. When our daughter, Lea, said she wanted to attend Geneseo we were thrilled. Lea loved her time at Geneseo. She and I share the honor of both being members of Sigma Kappa Sorority. I was so happy to be a part of her initiation day and share this sisterhood connection. Andrew is following in his father's footsteps by studying Business & Accounting. We are excited for him to start at Geneseo soon."

"The Geneseo legacy in my family holds deep significance because it represents a tradition of excellence, community, and enduring connections. It signifies a shared history of education and achievement, as well as a network of relationships built over generations. For us, it's about honoring the past while embracing the future, cherishing the values and experiences that have shaped us, and contributing positively to our community and beyond. It's a source of pride and a reminder of the importance of education, community involvement, and personal growth."

"My mother absolutely loved her four years at Geneseo! She always speaks so highly of Geneseo! Because of that, and knowing that it’s such a great college with a beautiful campus, she encouraged me to visit and apply. I am so happy that I did. I am looking forward to seeing first-hand why my mom loved her time at Geneseo and making my own memories as I navigate my undergraduate years. It will be a special bond with both mother and daughter being Geneseo grads!"

Kim Gross Berry '87

Sister: Kathleen Gross Rapisarda '85

My parents didn't go to college, so my older sister Kathy was the first in our family to attend college in the early 1980s. We didn't have a lot of money, so we knew (or at that time, thought) that we couldn't afford a private college. We were told that if we wanted a college education, we would have to go to a state school - and we would have to pay for it ourselves.

I followed my sister to Geneseo simply because I didn't know where else to go, and it was the only college I applied to. Don't get me wrong - Geneseo was absolutely the right place for me. My point is simply that as first-generation college students, we didn't know anything about the college admissions process, or how to finance an education other than relying on grants and loans.

Luckily, it was a different time. I still have the bill from my first semester in 1983. Can you believe tuition was $600? Still, I don't know how I managed to pay for it. I graduated with $10,000 in college loans and was easily able to pay it off over the next 10 years. I feel for the college graduates of today - they are being taken to the cleaners on their student loans. People don't understand that they are being charged interest that is compounded daily. Friends who graduated 20 years ago are still paying their loans and even though they've paid what they originally borrowed, they still owe more than they ever borrowed.

My sister Kathy went on to get her master's degree at the University of Buffalo and is now a retired elementary school librarian. We both know the value of education and even though we don't have children of our own we are watching our nieces as they approach college age and hoping they find their college home as well.
