Health Insurance for International Students
Health Insurance - United Healthcare
The SUNY United Healthcare (UHC) insurance plan is mandatory for all international students enrolled at SUNY Geneseo.
All International students are automatically enrolled in the SUNY UHC insurance plan prior to the start of each semester. The insurance plan will be billed to your student account.
Insurance Coverage
Health care costs in the United States can be extremely expensive. The U.S. Department of State and SUNY require all international students, scholars, and their dependents in the U.S. to have health insurance that meets minimum coverage requirements for sickness, accidents, medical evacuation and repatriation in effect for the duration of their Exchange Visitor status. The UHC plan approved by SUNY meets (or exceeds) all Department of State requirements.
The International Student and Scholar Services office will enroll you in the SUNY UHC insurance plan prior to your arrival in the United States. The plan will take effect on August 15.
United Healthcare offers an app and an online portal that you can use to download a copy of your insurance card. ISSS recommends that you set up your account as soon as possible so that you can easily access your insurance anytime. The insurance portal is available prior to your enrollment in the program. If you would like to access the UHC Global Intelligence Center (insurance portal) prior to your arrival in the U.S., you can do so by following these instructions.
Current students can access their UHC account by visiting https://myaccount.uhcsr.com
Once logged in, you can:
- Print your insurance ID card
- View the UnitedHealthcare Member Guide
- Review your health insurance plan benefits
- Locate providers, hospitals, and pharmacies that you can use with your plan

Insurance Waivers
The SUNY Geneseo UHC insurance plan is mandatory for all international students, even if you already have insurance in your home country. In rare circumstances, students can request a waiver if their plan meets the following criteria:
- The plan must be issued by a U.S.-based insurer and be compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
- The coverage used for a waiver must meet or exceed the coverage provided through SUNY.
- Any policy used to waive insurance must be in effect no later than August 15 for fall and January 15 for spring (new students only).
If the waiver processors, Haylor Freyer and Coon, determine that your health insurance plan meets or exceeds the requirements for waiver, but has insufficient medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, your student account will be refunded for the full plan premium. Additional med/evac coverage could be added.
To request a waiver, visit Geneseo's Haylor Freyer and Coon portal and submit the required documentation.
Waivers of the UHC insurance plan are not common. Waivers that are denied cannot be appealed.
