MATH 371 - Introduction to Complex Analysis

TEXT:  Fundamentals of Complex Analysis for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, 3rd  Edition, by Saff and Snider, Prentice Hall (2003).

 

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

     The final grade for this course will be based upon two in-class exams, a final exam, and homework.  The final exam will be given on Wednesday, December 17 at 8 AM. The in-class exams will be given on or near Friday, October 3 and Friday, November 7.  The weight given to each part of the evaluation is as follows:

Tests (in-class).........................................................……..45%

Final exam...................................................................…..30%

Homework...............................................….........….........25%

Homework assignments may be done in groups of 2-4 with one copy turned in for the group.

 

The grades will be assigned on the following schedule.

A  -  93-100%      A-  -  90-92%    B+  -  87-89%    B  -  83-86%       B-  -  80-82%

C+  -  77-79%      C  -  73-76%     C-  -   70-72%    D  -  60-69%       E   -   0-59%.

 

CONTENT OUTLINE:

     The course will cover the bulk of chapters 1-4 of the text,  with selected topics from chapters 5-8, depending on the interests of the class.  The topics include:

1.      The Complex Numbers

2.      The Complex Plane

3.      Functions of a Complex Variable

4.      Analytic Functions

5.      The Elementary Functions -

6.      Complex Integration

7.      Infinite Series Representations

8.      Residue Theory (if time permits)

9.      Conformal Mapping (if time permits)

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:

     A make-up exam will be given only if I am supplied with a verifiable medical excuse or arrangements have been made prior to the scheduled exam.
