233 Textbook Errors
Please email me any corrections to the textbook - typos, grammar, or
mathematical errors. I will give credit for the first one I receive
and post them here.
Discovered by students thus far:
the error was the result should have been 2p1 + 2p2 + 2p3 = 9, not -9, this
was found in chapter 4.4, example 4.13, and the page is 157.
on page 195 the sentence is “In terms of spanning, a set of vectors is
linearly independent if it does not contain unnecessary vectors, that is not
vector is in the span of the others.” they mean to say “… that is NO
vector is the span of the others,”
exercise 4.10.7 and 4.10.8 are exactly the same
example 9.29 from the book, the math is done incorrectly. the example says
that p(x) = 3/7 (2p(x) - q(x)) + 2/7(p(x) + 3q(x)). however
it should be p(x) = 3/7(2p(x) - q(x)) + 1/7(p(x) + 3q(x))
example 5.26 the resulting matrix should be 1/5(-3,4,-3,4) however they have
it as 1/5(-3,8,-3,8).
on page 459 when they are proving a(x+y)= ax+ay. When they write out the
vectors they just write x out twice instead of x once then y
once.
on page 224 for questions 4.10.21-31 they accidentally have forgotten the
first ‘e’ in “these”.
example 5.1 the 3rd and final sentence in the intro to the solution is
missing the word "is". the sentence reads "This what we mean when we
say that A transforms vectors". The sentence should read "this is what we
mean when we say that A transforms vectors".
