Matlab’s User Interface

Sections 1.1, 1.2, Edinburgh “Desktop” video

• Matlab is a super-powerful programmable calculator
• Overview of how to start Matlab
• Basic commands, e.g., arithmetic, store values in “variables”
• Why use Matlab, e.g., mathematical problem-solving such as plotting

Lesson

• Trig operations
  • Sine, cosine, etc.
  • Inverses
  • In degrees or radians
  • Use matlab documentation search or internet search to find these
• diary command
  • Logs interactions w/ matlab to a file
  • You might not see anything in the file until you stop logging though
  • Here’s a diary file with the things I demonstrated in Matlab for the rest of this class:

            1 + 5
            ans =
                6
            107 plus 28
              107 plus 28

            127 + 8

• Addition (and other arithmetic) can more or less be done just by writing it, as in diary above. But be careful that some operators are more obvious than others
