Histograms from Particle Data

IViPP can display histograms of the highlighted particles’ energies. For particles that have different energies at different times, the energy used in the histogram is the energy the particle had when it was inside the selector that marked it. If a particle has multiple energies inside a single selector, one will be used arbitrarily in the histogram.

To create a new energy histogram, use the “Particle Statistics” command in the “View” menu. This command opens a new energy histogram panel, as shown in Figure 6.1. Only particles that are highlighted by a selector will be included in the histogram. You can have multiple histograms open at one time; each appears in its own panel, and presents only the particles that were highlighted at the time it was created.

[An Energy Histogram]
Figure 6.1. A histogram of particle energies.

The two text input fields along the vertical axis of the histogram (straddling the label “Number of Particles” and containing the values “0” and “12” in Figure 6.1) denote the minimum and maximum particle counts to use along the vertical axis. The two text input fields along the horizontal axis of the histogram (straddling “Energy” and containing “6000” and “7696.22” in figure 6.1) denote the minimum and maximum energies to use along the horizontal axis. All four of these parameters can be entered by the user.

The text field labeled “Number of bins” sets the number of bars to use in the histogram. The higher this number is, the smaller the range of energies in each bar in the histogram.

After changing a histogram’s count or energy bounds, or number of bins, click the “Update” button to redraw the histogram using the new parameters.
