Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protective Equipment
When a hazard cannot be completely eliminated, occupational health and safety regulations require PPE be worn. PPE are specifically designed to protect the wearer from injury.
Impermeable gloves, for instance, can protect the wearer's hands from acids or solvents when it is necessary to handle such materials. Glasses and/or safety goggles protect the wearer from potential eye injuries resulting from chemicals splashes (goggles) or flying particles (safety glasses).
To determine what hazards are present, a supervisor or faculty member completes the Hazard Assessment Form for tasks performed within their area of supervision. That individual and EHS then determine what PPE would best protect those involved.
PPE must fit well, and above all....BE WORN. All the best equipment does nothing to protect campus personnel if it is left in the closet or hanging from a hook!
