Geneseo's eGarden is a key sustainability training ground on campus.
GENESEO, N.Y. – Two SUNY Geneseo faculty members have each received a $750 mini-grant from the Finger Lakes Project to jointly develop a sustainability curriculum project titled “Food Sustainability Across Disciplines.”
Karleen West, assistant professor of political science and international relations, and Suann Yang, assistant professor of biology, will incorporate the curriculum module into three courses during the 2017-18 academic year: Principles of Ecology in the fall and spring, and Global Environmental Politics in the spring. West and Yang will teach the courses within a free-standing sustainability curriculum module that can be incorporated into multiple courses. In addition, they have developed a framework in the module for students to construct personal philosophies for sustainable decision-making.
The module will be included as program course offerings in two departments, biology, and political science and international relations, and they plan to expand their pilot curriculum module into additional sustainability modules.
Sustainability is supported in Geneseo’s mission, values and curriculum, and the Sustainability Commission is one of two presidential commissions at the College. In addition, the College recently adopted the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
