Piano Trio to Perform Works by Walker, Schubert Dec. 3

James Walker, professor emeritus of music

A new work titled “Moments Past” composed by James Walker (above), professor emeritus of music at SUNY Geneseo, will open the Geneseo Piano Trio concert Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. in the Doty Hall recital hall.

GENESEO, N.Y.—The SUNY Geneseo Music Department’s Faculty and Guest Artist Series will feature the Geneseo Piano Trio Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. in Doty Recital Hall. The program will begin with a recently composed work, “Moments Past,” by James Walker, professor emeritus of music at the College.

Walker describes “Moments Past” as “a short, somewhat rambling, repetitive, episodic, very difficult, dissonant, developmental bit of composition, using several fragments borrowed from previous compositions. Hence, the title “Moments Past” or even “Moments Passed.”

The trio also will perform Schubert’s “Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 100,” a large-scale work featuring some of Schubert’s finest writing for a chamber group.

“Like the Walker composition, it is technically demanding, set in four movements,” said trio member and pianist Jonathan Gonder, professor of music at Geneseo. “As such, Schubert offers a wide variety of musical themes and moods. The music is lyrical, dramatic, dance-like and playful. It is a masterful and challenging work and has become one of the mainstays of the trio repertoire.”

In addition to Gonder, Geneseo Piano Trio members include music department lecturers Andrew Bergevin on the violin and James Kirkwood on the cello.

The concert is free and open to the public.
