Students on a hurricane relief trip with Livingston CARES.

For more than ten years, Geneseo students, alumni and community have been involved in relief efforts in hurricane-ravaged areas of the country. Trips are planned for Houston and Tampa in January.

GENESEO, N.Y. -- For well over 10 years, Geneseo students, faculty, staff and community residents have helped homeowners in the Biloxi area rebuild their homes and communities after Hurricane Katrina. Conducted through Livingston CARES, SUNY Geneseo’s non-profit humanitarian organization, these efforts serve as one of the College’s longest-running relief commitments.

A unique partnership between SUNY Geneseo, the Town and Village of Geneseo, the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce, the Livingston County Administrator and Board of Supervisors, Livingston CARES has facilitated 40 trips to the Biloxi region, drawing the support of close to 1,000 volunteers in rebuilding and other service efforts.

In recent years, Livingston CARES has expanded its geographic reach, organizing a range of service trips to communities impacted by Hurricanes Sandy and this year, adding areas devastated by Harvey, Irma and Maria. Several week-long trips will be offered in 2018 and Livingston CARES welcomes the participation of campus members and community residents. Dates and locations of the trips include:

Jan. 7-13: Houston, Tex.; Tampa, Fla.

Mar. 10-16: Houston, Tex.; Tampa, Fla.; Puerto Rico

Mar.  11-17: Brooklyn, N.Y.

May 13-19: Houston, Tex.; Tampa, Fla; Puerto Rico; Biloxi, Miss.

Projects will include tasks such as the remediation of flood damaged homes and community service initiatives. Trip fees vary as does airfare costs.
