Position Summary

HIGHLIGHTS

SUNY Geneseo is looking for a new employee to join the Facilities Department as a Plumber & Steamfitter, SG-12. The incumbent will be responsible for all plumbing and steamfitting work, including the planning and laying out of work and determining the cause of trouble in plumbing and heating systems and equipment in an assigned project. May supervise others in the installation, alteration and repair of pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, ventilating, heating control, water, and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes. The new employee will also be responsible for repairing, maintaining and installing plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, commodes, drinking fountains, dishwashers, valves including pneumatic controls, gas and water meters, gas hot water heaters and other gas appliances, heating systems and controls and various steam equipment. In cases of malfunction or breakdown, he or she will visually inspect the fixtures or equipment and use appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine cause and location of trouble. Incumbent will follow technical manuals, codes, diagrams and previous experience to make repairs and order replacement parts indicating quality and type of materials required. This position is assigned to the Core Shop.

Preferred Qualifications

DIVISION OPERATING NEEDS

Working knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing and steamfitting trade. Working knowledge of applicable plumbing code regulations and of the mathematics of the plumbing trade. Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings and specifications. Ability to do moderately heavy lifting and to stand for prolonged periods of time.
Applicants must possess a valid NYS driver’s license, be able to understand and follow instructions and communicate verbally. Candidates must have a record of dependability and past work performance, including satisfactory time and attendance record. Candidates must possess computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned. Applicants must be proficient in welding, bracing and soldering using gas, arc and mig, as used in piping and plumbing applications. As assigned, incumbent will supervise and/or train others in performing same or directly related work. ACM certification is preferred.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a NYS two-year Plumber & Steamfitter Traineeship or NYS two-year plumbing training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent plumbing two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled journey-level plumber which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in plumbing or training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
*Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Function 1: Knowledge of the Plumbing Trade
-Providing removal and installation of plumbing equipment and service to buildings. Plans new installations, alterations to existing installations and major repairs consistent with specifications, plans and plumbing codes.
-Fixture replacements for anything that has a drain or water, i.e., toilets, sinks.
-Unclogging drains and piping in new systems or repairing old systems.
-Attend to the campus sewer system and piping, rain water systems and sewer stakeouts. Assembles and installs a variety of metal and non-metal pipe and pipe fittings, measuring, cutting, threading and bending to required angle.
-Following technical manuals, codes, diagrams and previous experience, plans work procedures to make repairs and order replacement parts according to plumbing code regulations. Reviews building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installation. May draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale from oral or written instructions. From blueprints or specifications may estimate labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary for the project. Assembles materials, tools and equipment required to complete the work according to the plans reviewed.

Function 2: General Maintenance

-Maintain preventative maintenance equipment: sprinkler systems, exit lights, generators, pumps, motors, air handlers, exhaust fans, make-up air systems, VAV, hot water systems, building envelope, roof and drain systems. In cases of malfunction or breakdown, uses appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine cause and location of trouble. Tools of the plumbing and steamfitting trade include standard hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, etc. Welding, brazing and soldering is done using gas and arc welding equipment.

Function 3: HVAC

-Repair and replacement of heating, air conditioning parts, filters, belts, and motors.
-Working with steam and their parts, traps, spence valves, lines and condensation systems, tube bundles, valves and some controls.
-Working on air handlers, make-up air units, and exhaust fans.
-Working with hot water systems, heating and domestic systems, HWT, pumps, explanation tanks, piping and repair of the piping system.

Observes and inspects the work while in progress and when completed to insure that the work is done properly.
