Position Summary |
HIGHLIGHTS:
Janitors are responsible for performing a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and care of campus buildings and adjacent grounds, including, but not limited to, special cleaning projects, managing set up and tear down for events, and completing snow removal on sidewalks and walkways adjacent to buildings. Other duties include:
-Supervises and prioritizes work assignments for a small group of custodial staff for an assigned work area. Takes responsibility and ownership for assigned area to ensure expectations and quality of cleaning standards are met. Provides feedback and training to cleaning staff as necessary.
-Performs repairs and recurrent routine maintenance work. Refers matters requiring semi-skilled or skilled trades work to higher level staff.
-Communicates and interacts in a professional and courteous manner with building users and peers, including responding to and managing emergency calls, and performing or leading the respective custodial group to handle the cleaning, as appropriate to custodial duties.
-Reports damages or needed maintenance repair in an assigned area for which a higher level repair capability is needed.
-Promotes positive work environment by modeling and reinforcing Facilities Services Workplace Protocols. Provides feedback to Cleaners as necessary.
-Maintains accurate records associated with custodial operation for an assigned
building(s) related to supplies and equipment, employee attendance, time management and inventories.

Preferred Qualifications |
DIVISION OPERATING NEEDS:
-Ability to perform medium to heavy physical manual labor, which will require standing, bending, stooping and stretching for long periods of time and the ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds.
-Working knowledge of cleaning practices, procedures, substances and equipment.
-Working knowledge of small hand tools and the ability to use them to make routine/recurrent repairs.
-Must possess a valid driver’s license.
-Able to understand and follow instructions and read, write and communicate verbally.
-Candidate must be dependable, self-directed and have a reliable time and attendance record.
-Candidate should be able to demonstrate working knowledge of Facilities Services Workplace Protocols.

Required Qualifications |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Non-competitive; must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and to communicate effectively to obtain and convey information.
New York State Preferred Lists candidates have preference.

Janitors are supervised by the Supervising Janitor, SG-11 title.

Routine Repairs/Use of Equipment
-Performs repairs and routine maintenance work.
-Uses hand tools to make simple carpentry repairs such as fixing or replacing broken shelving, hinges and screens.
-Uses plumbers snake and/or other hand tools and preparations to unplug toilets, traps and sinks.
-Uses appropriate equipment such as ladders, scaffolding and man-lift (Geni-lift) to replace light bulbs.
-Removes snow that is adjacent to buildings.
-Reports damages or needed maintenance repairs in an assigned area for which a higher level repair capability is needed.

Equipment Setup
-Sets up equipment and seating facilities for public meetings, seminars, demonstration projects, etc.
-Manages a small crew of custodial staff to complete setup and tear down for special campus events, meetings and gatherings. Assigns work and provides oversight for the event setup in accordance with customer specifications.

-Responsible for the cleaning and care of assigned buildings.
-Uses mops, brushes, detergents, buffers, floor scrubs and other cleaning implements.
-Washes floors, corridors, stairs and stairwells, walls, partitions, windows from the inside of buildings, etc.
-Scrubs and cleans all areas of the lavatories.
-Strips, vacuums and waxes floors and shampoos carpets.
-Moves furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning and care functions.
-Changes curtains and drapes and polishes wood and metal fixtures.
-Requisitions and dispenses supplies such as paper towels and soap.
