Proposal Writing Support Award

DEADLINES: September 16, 2024 and February 17, 2025 at 8 am

Guidelines

The intent of SUNY Geneseo’s Proposal Writing Support Award is to provide full-time faculty members with time or other support to write major proposals for submission to external funding agencies. Faculty members may request support for the writing of either:

  1. New proposals, or
  2. Significant revisions of previously submitted proposals

Support will be considered for major proposals in all academic fields and for a variety of initiatives (e.g. fellowships, research grants, educational grants).  A “major” proposal is defined as one requesting a total of $15,000 or more in support from the sponsor. Course reassignments for either the fall 2025 or spring 2026 semester should be requested approximately one year in advance (see deadlines below). Please consider the appropriate sponsor deadline(s) when deciding on the semester. Other forms of support may be requested for the next semester.

Applications may be submitted by individual faculty members or collaborating teams of two or more faculty members.  Proposal Writing Support Awards are funded by The Geneseo Foundation.


Support Options

Individual applicants may request one of the following support options:

  1. One 3- (or 4- if required) credit course reassignment
  2. $2,500 for faculty summer salary
  3. Up to $4,145 towards any combination of research support costs including student research assistant(s), travel support for conferences or research, or research equipment, supplies, software, or services
  4. A combination of summer salary and research support costs totaling up to $4,145

Collaborating team applicants may request one of the following support options:

  1. 3- or (4- if required) credits of course reassignment
  2. $3,750 for faculty summer salary
  3. Up to $6,217 towards any combination of research support costs (see examples above)
  4. A combination of summer salary and research support costs totaling up to $6,217

Please consider the appropriate sponsor deadline(s) if you are requesting a course reassignment. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, proposals must be submitted within one year of the end of the semester or summer in which the award is used.  Failure to comply with this requirement will disqualify you from future Proposal Writing Support Awards.


Prepare your application

The Research Council has developed a RUBRIC for evaluation of Proposal Writing Support Award applications, which may be useful as you prepare your application.

  1. Download and complete the Proposal Writing Support Award Cover Sheet
  2. Download and complete the Budget Worksheet for Individual Applicants or the Budget Worksheet for Collaborating Applications
  3. Prepare a copy of your CV to upload
  4. If applying for a Course Reassignment: Applicants are responsible for notifying their Chair of the application and the Chair should email Anne Baldwin (baldwina@geneseo.edu) a statement saying that they “Have been informed of and support {applicant’s name}’s Proposal Writing Support Award application for a {# credits requested} course reassignment for the {Fall/Spring, Year} semester.”
  5. Prepare your proposal, a maximum of 5 pages (not including cover sheet), which should include:  
  • A description of the proposed project for which you are seeking external funding and how the support you are requesting will increase your chances of success
  • The amount of the external funding to be requested, the duration of the grant or fellowship period, and the form of the external funds you are requesting (support for research supplies/services, personnel support, participation in an off-campus fellowship to complete scholarly or creative activities, etc.)
  • Timeline: The timeline should begin with the activities supported by the Proposal Writing Support Award and conclude with the expected date of submission of the external proposal.
  • Staffing requirements (who would be involved if the externally-funded proposal is awarded and an estimated amount of effort per year for each person involved)
  • Information on student impact, as applicable
  • A statement of broader impact/benefits to the College
  • If applicable, a list of previous external proposal submissions and awards for which you were the project director/principal investigator or co-project director/co-principal investigator (please include the proposal title, sponsor/program name, number of years of support requested, total dollar amount requested/awarded, date of submission, and award date, if applicable)
  • For significant revisions to a previously submitted proposal, please provide details about the extent of modifications required to address reviewers comments and justification for the need for support for the resubmission.
