Jill (Yonkers) Emmons '96 Joins SUNY Geneseo College Council

Jill (Yonkers) Emmons '96

GENESEO, N.Y. – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has appointed Jill (Yonkers) Emmons to the SUNY Geneseo College Council. Emmons is a 1996 Geneseo graduate and is a policy coordinator for Erie 1 BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) in West Seneca, N.Y.  

Jill YonkersThe council advises Geneseo’s senior administration and provides valuable assistance for problem-solving and for identifying expertise beyond the campus community. Council members meet with the college administration four times a year.

“I warmly welcome Jill to the council and look forward to drawing on her considerable professional experience as we help move the College forward,” said College Council chair Robert Wayland-Smith. “She joins several other alumni on the council, all who bring an important perspective to our discussions.”

At Erie 1 BOCES, Emmons develops and maintains policy manuals for various school districts across New York to codify their beliefs and governing principles. She also creates regulations, forms, and guidance documents for administrators to help districts direct their day-to-day operations. This includes safety guidance documents and athletic handbooks.

Before joining Erie 1 BOCES, Emmons was a partner in a Buffalo law firm. Her fifteen-year 15-year practice focused on counseling schools, municipalities, insurers, and corporations on developing strategies and implementing procedures to improve safety, reduce liability and avoid litigation. She was a regular speaker on municipal law/zoning, education law, athletics, and litigation- avoidance issues.

Emmons graduated from Syracuse University College of Law, cum laude, and was a member of the Syracuse Law Review and Moot Court Honor Society. At Geneseo, she was a biology major with an environmental studies minor and was an active student athlete, serving three years as co-captain of the varsity softball team. She received numerous high honors for her academic and athletic successes. She currently serves on the board of the Geneseo Roundtable Athletic Association and is a committee member of the Buffalo and Western New York regional chapter of the SUNY Geneseo Alumni Association.

“Jill is well known for her active involvement at Geneseo as an alumna, and I’m pleased that she is taking on this new responsibility to serve the College,” said SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles. “She has become well-versed in her career on a variety of topics that will benefit the College Council immensely.”  

Emmons joins Wayland-Smith and seven other members of Geneseo’s College Council: The Rev. Dr. Iris Banister; Melisza Campos; Dr. Robert A. Heineman; Dr. A. Gidget Hopf; Dr. Judith Hunter; Mary Luckern; Christian N. Valentino; and Geneseo student and Student Association President Michael Baranowski.
