GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo is among 46 “Best Buy Schools” in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, named in the 2017 edition of “The Fiske Guide to Colleges.” Inclusion on the list in the highly respected publication is based on the quality of academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance.
The publication names 46 institutions this year – 21 public and 26 private – as “Best Buys,” categorized as inexpensive or moderately priced with a four- or five-star academic rating. Geneseo has been consistently named to the list for several years.
It’s the 33rd anniversary of the guide, created by former New York Times education editor Edward Fiske, who launched the guide when he sensed that college-bound students and their families needed better information on which to base their educational choices. Not only does the guide have an “Index by Price” that groups public and private institutions into four price categories, from inexpensive to very expensive, but also suggests a number of schools that offer outstanding academics and high quality student life programs with relatively moderate prices.
The guide accepts no consulting, advertising or other fees from colleges and has no outside relationship with colleges working on its behalf. The goal of the publication is to help future students select the best colleges to reach their own goals in a price range that is manageable for their personal circumstances.
