Percussion Ensemble May 2 to Close Out Semester Musical Concerts

Suny Geneseo Campus

GENESEO, N.Y.—An eclectic fusion of music will be presented on May 2 at the Geneseo Percussion Ensemble’s concert. Closing out the spring semester for musical performances, the Department of Music will stage the performance at 8 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. It’s free and open to the public.

“This all-student ensemble from SUNY Geneseo will wow you with their talents as they present this showcase concert,” said Jim Tiller, director of the Geneseo Percussion Ensemble and adjunct professor of music.

The concert will open with “Japanese Overture” by Ney Rosauro. The enchanting piece not only uses the Japanese children’s song “Sakura-Sakura” in its thematic material, but also a theme from Brazilian composer Heitor Villa Lobos’ work.

Following “Japanese Overture,” the Geneseo Percussion Ensemble will perform a variety of different works from a plethora of composers, including Nathan Daughtrey and Eric Ewazen. The ensemble will also differ from other concerts in their selection of instruments.

“You won't want to miss this group, as they play everything from marimbas to wood blocks and more,” said Tiller. “There is even a piece that is performed entirely with coffee cups!”
