Revelations: A Musical Miscellany

Suny Geneseo Campus

In honor of the Inauguration of President Denise Battles, “Revelations: A Musical Medley” will be performed on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. Featuring a wide range of student music ensembles, the event is “a great musical sampling,” according to Music Department Chair Gerard Floriano. The concert is free and open to the public.

Floriano noted that Geneseo Chamber Singers, Saxophone Quartet, Clarinet Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, String Band and Percussion Ensemble will all be performing, as well as featuring a duet, solo, jazz combo, and piano solo.

Floriano said that the Inaugural Committee sought to showcase student talent, and the music department was more than willing to create a concert to demonstrate the high level of capability and passion that Geneseo students possess, as well as the option for students of any major to get involved in the department.

“If you play jazz, you can do jazz here. If you play violin, you can play the violin here,” said Floriano. “You can sing in a group or do a solo or duet.”

He added that he had a specific goal in mind with the concert in terms of its structure.

“I kind of had a vision of how I wanted it to be shaped,” said Floriano. “I wanted it to have some fast numbers, some slow numbers, fast, slow––it’s always alternating so nobody gets bored.”

The performance will last for approximately one hour and is only one act with no intermission. Despite the shorter nature of the concert, Floriano explained that there is a myriad of musical styles incorporated including jazz, classical, spiritual and a capella. He added that in a unique spin, Percussion Ensemble will perform a piece on garbage cans.

Like the Inauguration of President Battles, “Revelations” is sure to be a memorable event.

“You’ve got to go,” said Floriano. “It’s the place to be.”
