SUNY Geneseo Fifth Nationally in ‘Washington Monthly’ 2015 Rankings

GENESEO, N.Y. – Washington Monthly magazine has ranked SUNY Geneseo fifth overall among the nation’s 673 master's universities for its contribution to the public good across three broad categories: social mobility, research and civic engagement, and promoting an ethic of service to country. It’s the third year in a row that Geneseo has been in the top five schools in the rankings.

“This ranking is particularly satisfying to us because we try very hard to provide a strong academic program while simultaneously emphasizing the vital importance of service to community,” said Meaghan Arena, Geneseo’s vice president for enrollment management. “We frequently hear from current students that the service programs they are involved in are a very meaningful part of their Geneseo experience, and alumni tell us the same thing retrospectively.”

The magazine’s 2015 rankings include 673 colleges in its master’s universities category, which includes schools that offer comprehensive undergraduate programs, some master's programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. Geneseo offers master’s degrees in education and accounting.

The magazine defines social mobility as recruiting and graduating low-income students and helping them earn degrees. The research category comprises the production of cutting-edge scholarship and students who go on to earn doctorates. Service was defined as encouraging students to give something back to their country. The overall score is calculated by combining the scores of all three categories.

Geneseo fared particularly well in the research category, ranking seventh in the number of alumni who go on to earn a doctorate; in the community service participation and hours served category, ranking 40th in the nation; and in the Peace Corps category, ranking 5th in the nation in the number of alumni who serve in the Peace Corps, relative to size. The college also ranked 245th in the country in actual versus predicted graduation rates related to the net price of attendance.
