Ed. in Reading from the State University of New York at Oneonta and her B.S. in Special Education from the College of St. Rose. She has over 20 years experience teaching students in K-12 and adult populations in New York State. She has presented her research at national and international conferences.
Dr. Urso believes we need to prepare teachers who are culturally competent and committed to social justice. She also believes our teachers must be highly skilled in effective, culturally responsive assessment, intervention and instructional techniques for children with disabilities.
Dr. Urso's research interests include the role of processing speed in poor readers and the development of effective reading interventions for students with dyslexia who have failed to respond to intervention. Dr. Urso also studies the preparation of culturally responsive practitioners, specifically the impact of coursework designed using the theoretical framework of cultural historical activity theory. She is actively involved in supporting local school districts in their efforts to support students with learning differences.
Dr. Urso is currently involved in the Woodcock Johnson IV Norming Study, is conducting qualitative research on the impact of Real World Geneseo on the cultural competence of participants, and is conducting a joint research study on the dyslexia in children in the US and Turkey. She is the secretary for the Division for Learning Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Urso is the co-advisor of the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi.
