Atomic Energy Merit Badge
Atomic Energy Merit Badge
In 1982, I revised the Atomic Energy merit badge booklet for the Boy Scouts of America. The work included writing the text; working with artist Dave Cochrane, drawing some of the diagrams, arranging for photography, and simulating a patient in one picture.
In 2004 I worked with the staff of BSA National Office to revise Atomic Energy into Nuclear Science. We developed a new set of requirements and worked with other authors to revise the booklet. I also designed the new patch for the merit badge.
In 2005 I rewrote the Energy merit badge pamphlet. The content was designed to teach energy science and the impact of energy use on society. That content was built on learning about the limitations of energy technologies based on the physical principles of energy (the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics). An official from the US Department of Energy in 2005 called the Energy merit badge pamphlet, "The best available material for teaching high school students about energy."
