How the brain learns (Webinar): Implications for Teaching and learning
October 8, 2013 2:00 - 3:00pm, Milne 208
Two leaders in the field of metacognition (knowing about knowing) will
review what science now tells us about the learning process and share
concrete classroom strategies and methods that are informed by that science.
This seminar by Leslie Myers, M.Ed., of Chestnut Hill College, and
Melissa Terlecki, Ph.D., of Cabrini College, is based on the
highest-rated session from the 2013 Teaching Professor Conference.
There's much to be learned from the study of brain function that can
have a profound impact on pedagogy. Recent neuroscience findings shed
new light on the external and internal factors that affect acquiring,
processing, and learning new knowledge.

Active Learning Strategies for Large Classes with Dr. Sandi Connelly
November 5, 2013 8:30 - 9:45am and 1:00 - 2:15pm, Milne 208
Sandra J. Connelly, PhD
Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences
Rochester Institute of Technology
“What are you doing in that classroom!??!" was a phrase often heard by Dr. Sandi Connelly (Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY)! She has now proven to her students, colleagues, and administrators time and time again that "alternate content delivery" increases student success in her courses, from large to small and majors to non-majors -- even if some days her classroom resembles grade school recess! Sandi has incorporated aspects of active learning that work for her and for her students, are easy to use, and even easier to assess. And, now, you can take a moment and be one of her students. You are invited to embrace topics, just as her students do every day! Sandi will give you a set of "go to's" that she implements on a weekly basis to excite students (and herself!) about the materials. Try your hand at "Convince Me" or "30 Seconds of Fame"! You will leave the session with at least one idea that you can walk in to class and use TODAY, with less than 2 minutes of prep, guaranteed!
