Scope

This policy is applicable to faculty, staff, students and visitors to prevent accidental fires.  All electronic transportation devices shall be prohibited in all campus buildings, including residence halls, except as described below.

Policy Statement

To ensure the safety and well-being of the college community, the use of electronic transportation mobility devices (ETMDs) and similar motorized devices is prohibited in campus buildings including residence halls. This prohibition is intended to reduce the risk of injury to people and damage to college property. 

Exceptions may be made for individuals with mobility impairments who require the use of motorized wheelchairs or other approved devices for accessibility purposes in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other relevant regulations.

Policy

Electronic Transportation Mobility Devices (EMTDs) are prohibited from use, charging, or storage inside all College buildings 

including residence halls. Maintenance on ETMDs in buildings is prohibited.

The following devices are not permitted in campus buildings:

  • E-scooters – motorized scooters powered by electric or battery systems.
  • E-bikes – electric bicycles or similar motor-assisted pedal vehicles.
  • Hoverboards – self-balancing, two-wheeled, motorized boards.
  • Wheelies – one wheeled motorized device. 
  • Unicycles- one wheeled motorized device
  • Motorized Skateboards – battery-powered skateboards or longboards.
  • Segways – motorized two-wheeled devices for personal transport.
  • Other Similar Devices – any battery-powered, motorized devices used for transportation.
  • Lithium batteries used in EMTDs

Exceptions

  • Disability Accommodations: Individuals with documented mobility impairments may use motorized wheelchairs or other ADA-compliant assistive devices on campus.
  • Emergency or Service Use: ETMDs used by University Police, emergency personnel, or maintenance staff in the course of their duties are exempt from this policy.

Outside Use

  • ETMD users must obey traffic laws while in the roadway.
  • ETMD users must yield to pedestrians both on the sidewalk and in the roadway or on-campus privileges may be suspended.
  • E-mobility users assume all risk while operating devices on the SUNY Geneseo campus.
  • Commuters shall store E-bikes in outdoor bike racks.

Enforcement

Violations of this policy will result in the following actions:

  • Students: Subject to disciplinary actions in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Employees: Subject to disciplinary actions per the Employee Handbook and relevant campus policies.
  • Visitors: May be asked to leave campus and/or may be banned from returning.

Contractors: May face contract penalties or revocation of campus access.
