Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) Request
SUNY Geneseo fully complies with the New York State Freedom of Information Law (Article VI, Public Officers Law, as amended effective January 1, 1978). This law was enacted to assure public accountability of state agencies while protecting individuals against unwarranted invasions of personal privacy.
Records kept and maintained by SUNY Geneseo generally fall under the subject matter categories listed in Appendices of the State University of New York (SUNY)'s Record Retention and Disposition Schedule.
Note that only those records which SUNY Geneseo keeps and/or maintains are subject to disclosure under FOIL. FOIL imposes no obligation for an agency to translate, explain the content of, or create a new record.
All requests for SUNY Geneseo records under FOIL should be made in writing, through campus mail, campus email, or via U.S. Postal Service to:

Request records, in writing, from the FOIL Administrator. Reasonably describe the record(s) sought and include as much descriptive information as possible, such as:
- Date range
- Key words in a record
- File type (e.g., email, .txt, .pdf)
- Information that may help locate records
