Creating an Inclusive Library: Approaches for Increasing Engagement and Use with Students of Color (2024)

Summary

The award-winning library instruction program incorporated into the summer bridge program at SUNY Geneseo is a product of the librarians' understanding of the importance of advocating for BIPOC students.

Research questions

1. How are students' sense of inclusivity and belonging addressed in summer bridge programs?
2. What is an academic library's role in summer bridge programs?
3. How are SUNY Geneseo's students' sense of belonging developed via the library instruction program during the summer bridge program?

What the research builds on

Long before higher education’s most recent shift to antiracist practices and policies, many universities and colleges implemented summer bridge programs to assist students from diverse backgrounds in adjusting to the rigors of college. Historically, summer bridge programs provide an orientation of academic skills and social networking for students during the summer between graduating high school and entering their first year of college.
