Department Mission

We view ourselves as a group of teacher-scholars who are committed to providing all students with an opportunity to understand Philosophy as the core of the Liberal Arts experience, and as vital to their experience at Geneseo and their development as responsible citizens. To that end, we seek to impart understanding of philosophical traditions and their contemporary relevance while assisting students in the development of skills in critical thinking, reading, writing, listening, and discussing; we also position students to reflect upon the ways in which philosophical reasoning, argumentation, concepts, and texts apply to everyday life, including personally, locally, socially, politically, nationally, and globally.
