Student Care & Outreach

Student Care and Outreach supports students with complex needs and concerns by partnering with students themselves, as well as other campus offices and community resources to develop care plans that promote holistic wellness, safety/security, and academic success. Programs housed within The Office of Student Care and Outreach include Geneseo CAREs, Clinical Case Management, The Red Folder Initiative, and other clinical, non-clinical, and educational opportunities for students and campus partners.

The overarching mission is to promote the safety and well-being of the SUNY Geneseo community through early intervention strategies, educational outreach opportunities, and on-going collaborative care and clinical services. We will respond to and support students experiencing varying levels of social, emotional, academic, medical, or mental health concerns and distress.

Student Care and Outreach programs aim to:

  • Address and provide resources to students exhibiting or reporting concerning behaviors
  • Advocate for students experiencing extenuating life circumstances
  • Provide consultation to campus partners on how to navigate concerning situations
  • Educate the community on potential risk factors and referable indicators

Services Available:

Clinical Case Management

Clinical Case Management aims to provide short-term and goal-oriented interventions for students with concerns in singular or multiple life areas. Clinical Case Management directly supports students in overcoming obstacles, reducing distress, and connecting to appropriate on and off-campus resources by meeting with students as an included Health and Counseling service within Lauderdale Health Center.

Geneseo CAREs

At SUNY Geneseo, the Geneseo CAREs (Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation) Team has been established with the mission of providing multidisciplinary support and early intervention outreach to students whose behavior has been noted as disruptive or concerning by those in our campus community.

The Red Folder Initiative

The Red Folder Initiative is a nationally recognized, ongoing outreach project that involves providing all faculty and staff with a Red Folder that serves as a quick reference guide for working with students who may be struggling in areas of wellness – academic, physical, psychological, emotional, social, or others. Each folder includes information on identifying indicators of distress, tips for talking to students, and resources to contact for additional help.

*Updated Red Folders were distributed in Spring 2024. If you need additional Red Folders please submit a request online.

Campus Outreach

Our office is dedicated to supporting our campus community, especially our colleagues who are often the frontline to supporting students with complex life circumstances impacting their academic success and living experiences on campus. Investment in mental health and wellness education for non-clinical staff and faculty is an ongoing mission, thus we are happy to consult with any member of our campus who may have interest in learning more and expanding their skills.

To learn more about available workshops on topics such as mental health issues, communication and problem-solving, adjustment concerns, and more, please reach out to Director of Counseling Services, Jaime Castillo, PhD, LMHC

Student Care and Outreach is also proud to support the SUNY Geneseo Wellbeing Collective. If you are interested in becoming involved with this group and its mission, email co-chair Laura Swanson.
