SUNY Geneseo Internship and Living Stipend Application

The application period for Fall 2024 is now closed; 

the application period for Spring 2025 will open on Monday, December 2nd! 

SUNY Geneseo's Internship and Living Stipend enables students to participate in credit-bearing, on- and off-campus, unpaid internships, fieldwork, or curricular applied learning opportunities in public service and high-demand nonprofit sectors related to their future career goals while attending SUNY Geneseo. Funding provided can address barriers faced by students including transportation, parking, childcare, housing, food, and other incidental costs and expenses.

 

The goal of this initiative is to increase the number of students who participate in internship and applied learning experiences by removing the barriers faced when students participate in unpaid opportunities. We intend to increase the diversity of students who are able to participate in these career-building opportunities and recognize the barriers often faced by students from underrepresented identities as they enter the workforce. Through these efforts, we will be expanding the number of placements for our students in both on- and off-campus internships and applied learning opportunities. 

 

Eligibility

  • Must be a currently matriculated SUNY Geneseo undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing (not on academic probation). Students are not eligible after their graduation.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at SUNY Geneseo.
  • Must have secured an on- or off-campus unpaid internship, fieldwork, or curricular applied learning experience for the upcoming semester by the time of application. No retrospective stipends will be awarded.
    • You must have secured the experience at the time you apply for the stipend. You will be asked to provide your supervisor's information in the application so that we may verify and review your experience.
    • The experience must be supervised by someone at the organization's site. The site supervisor cannot be a family member.

This stipend is designed to support students who meet the following criteria:

  • Experiencing significant financial need or hardship 
  • Faced with significant barriers to completing an unpaid internship/practicum, including but not limited to: lack of transportation, lack of professional clothing, lack of housing support, and more. 

  • Students are eligible for only one stipend per degree program.

Application Process and Selection Timeline

  • Complete an application for the Internship and Living Stipend to be considered for a Fall 2024 stipend. 
  • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed by a committee of faculty/staff until Friday, September 13th, 2024. 
  • Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision in regards to the stipend award on a rolling basis beginning in August. 
Award Notification and Required Forms

All applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision via their Geneseo email.

For students to receive payment, they will need to:

  • Sign a standard voucher prepared by the Career Design Center
  • Sign and submit a copy of their award letter indicating that: 
    • They accept the award stipend
    • They understand that they must complete their academic curricular requirements successfully in order to receive full funding. (e.g., number of hours, any academic assignments, etc.) 
    • If plans change, students must notify The Career Design Center/the selection committee immediately via email at careers@geneseo.edu.
Award Amount

The stipends will be awarded according to the number of credit hours the internship or applied learning experience bears, with a cap of $1,500 per student. The number of awards per semester is based on the overall budget and may vary.

1 Credit: $500

2 Credits: $1,000

3+ Credits: $1,500 

Award Distribution

  • Stipends will be awarded in one payment as early in the semester as possible. A check will be mailed to the recipient at the address used on the Standard Voucher. Checks are processed from the Office of the State Comptroller in Albany.
  • Any international students who are selected must have an I - 20 for CPT or a DS 2019 document authorized for Academic Training by the International Student and Scholar Services Office in advance of starting the experience.
  • This is an internship/living stipend and is considered taxable income. It is the student’s responsibility to determine if taxes are owed on grant monies received in connection with course of study. Students should therefore consult a tax advisor regarding these grants.
For Student Teachers 

We are offering a limited number of $500 stipends to student teachers intended to support the expenses that come along with the experience. A committee of faculty and staff will consider applications on a rolling basis with an eye towards supporting a diverse population of teacher candidates and notify applicants of their decision at the beginning of the semester. 

Complete an application for the Internship and Living Stipend for Student Teachers to be considered for a Fall 2024 stipend. 

  • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed by a committee of faculty/staff until Friday, September 13th, 2024. 
  • Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision in regards to the stipend award on a rolling basis following the closing of the drop/add period.

 

Need help finding an internship?

Start early! Securing an internship can take time. Additionally, once you have identified and internship, the campus review and approval process may require executing an affiliation agreement, which can take up to six weeks. Make sure you are preparing at least a semester in advance as some companies have specific deadlines. The Career Design Center can assist with identifying suitable internships.
