2023 - 2024 Geneseo Recruiting Policies for Students
Participating in Geneseo recruiting is a privilege that carries with it certain expectations for conduct. We expect students to use Handshake correctly; portray all personal, work, and academic information accurately; prepare for interviews; dress appropriately (please visit our Interviewing Guide to review appropriate interview attire); and respond to employers in a timely fashion. Please contact the Career Design Center by phone at 585-245-5721 or by email at careers@geneseo.edu with question.
Eligibility for On-Campus Recruiting
We use Handshake to manage job postings, student communications, and scheduling for on-campus recruiting. To participate in on- ampus recruiting, a student must:
- Be a full-time matriculated student currently earning a degree at Geneseo, and taking classes on campus during the semester(s) of participation in recruiting. Students who are studying abroad may not participate.
- Be in good standing with the Career Design Center, which includes conducting oneself in a professional manner during the recruiting process and following the interview cancellation procedures if applicable. Students are encouraged to maintain an updated and accurate profile in Handshake.
The Interview Process
Students manage their own interview schedules to avoid conflicts with first round interviews, exams, coursework due dates, etc. If you sign up for interviews with more than one employer on the same day, avoid back-to-back interviews; if your first interview is delayed, you may miss the opportunity to interview with the second employer. Approaching employers directly on the day of the interview with an interview request is not acceptable.
Interview Cancellations and Consequences
Please thoroughly research employers and job openings to determine if you are interested in working for an employer before applying for an opening. Students should only apply after they have decided they are interested in working for that organization.
- Interview cancellation policy
-
The Career Design Center works towards developing employer relations on behalf of our students and is proud of these relationships and the opportunity they provide for our students. Employers also commit time and resources to Geneseo to interview students. If a student cancels an interview, it may negatively impact our relationship with the employer.
If you need to cancel an interview or you cannot attend a scheduled interview, you must notify the Career Design Center either phone at (585)245-5721 or in person (NOT via email) by 9 a.m. on the business day before your interview. If you cancel without sufficient notice as described above, you are considered a "no show," and will not be allowed to continue participating in recruiting events until you speak with a Career Design Center staff member. The staff member will determine whether you can continue to participate. A second "no show" will result in automatic forfeiture of the right to participate in recruiting events for that season/year.
If an interview is cancelled by the student, students are expected to notify the employer and submit a letter of apology to the recruiter and send a copy to careers@geneseo.edu.
Illegal Questions, Bias, Harassment, Alcohol, Etc.
Interviewers may not ask you illegal questions or demonstrate bias or harassment. In addition, alcohol or illegal substances should not be part of any aspect of the application process. Please report any concerns you have about an employer's conduct during the recruiting process to the Career Design Center.
Offers and Acceptances
When extending offers, we require employers to give students time to consider the offer to ensure a best fit for both parties. to facilitate this process, employers have been asked to extend offers in accordance with the following guidelines:
- Students Not Previously Employed by Offeror: Employers offering full-time positions to students not previously employed by them should leave offers open for 14 days following the date of the offer letter.
- Students Previously Employed by Offeror: Employers offering full-time positions to student previously employed by them may provide less time than above, however are encouraged to work with the student to ensure he/she/they have time to make an informed decision.
Accepting/Declining an Offer
Before accepting an offer, research the position, industry, and firm to negotiate the terms. See the Career Design Center for assistance.
*Student who have multiple offers are expected to narrow the field to the positions in which they have the most interest. Holding onto an offer in which a student has no interest keeps other students from receiving an offer.
*Once accepted, request a written confirmation, and confirm terms and conditions including salary, start date, benefits, etc. and send an email expressing gratitude for the offer and enthusiasm for the position and organization.
*Once accepted, stop all recruiting activities and conversations including applying and interviewing for employment. Withdraw other applications in Handshake. Cancel any upcoming interviews and do not accept additional interview invitations.
*To decline offers, pave the way for future opportunities by stating you have decided to decline the offer after careful consideration of your current interests and goals and express your gratitude for the opportunity to interview and for their interest in you.
Renege Policy
*Students are encouraged to understand their personal goals and values and offer clear communication to employers throughout the application process.
If you are considering reneging on a previously accepted offer, please see the Career Design Center immediately so that we can talk through the possibilities before making your decision. The Career Design Center may also be able to offer additional support to you via our relationship with the employer.
If we hear from an employer that a student has reneged, the Career Design Center has the right to refuse any future participation in on-campus interviewing and the student may be required to meet with the Career Design Center to discuss job offer etiquette and/or associated policies.
Pressure from Employers
Employers may not intimidate or exert undue pressure on job candidates to secure a job acceptance. A question such as "will you accept this job if I give you an offer today?" is an example of intimidation/undue pressure. Reduction in base salary (depending on when you accept and offer), is an example of an "exploding offer," and is not consistent with our policies. Please see a Career Design Center staff member if you experience these situations.
