Microcredentials

Microcredentials are short programs that allow participants to acquire specific skills or knowledge in a particular area. They're more flexible and accessible than traditional degree programs, offering a way for individuals to enhance their expertise or pursue new career paths.

SUNY Geneseo offers three types of microcredentials: integrative curricular microcredentials, co-curricular microcredentials, and professional development microcredentials.

Integrative Curricular Microcredentials

Integrative Curricular Microcredentials (ICMs) can be earned at Geneseo to demonstrate expertise in specialty areas of study. ICMs can be earned by Geneseo students and members of the public.

Members of the public who are not pursuing a degree at Geneseo but want to take one or more courses at the College are called "non-matriculated students."

Most ICMs consists of 6-12 credits (2-4 courses), applied learning, and self-reflection.

Upon completion of an ICM, the student will receive a college-branded digital badge and a notation in their transcript.

Professional Development Microcredentials (PDMs) are each focused on a specific skill or subject, making them a targeted and efficient way to gain expertise in a particular area.

PDMs can be earned by Geneseo students, though they are aimed primarily toward members of the public seeking to improve their skill set and knowledge, or professionals looking to stay up-to-date in their industries.

Completion of a PDM will provide a Geneseo-branded competency badge (though there will not be a transcript notation for Geneseo students). PDMs do not provide college credit upon completion.

Co-Curricular Microcredentials

Co-Curricular Microcredentials (CCMs) allow Geneseo students to document mastery of certain skills or competencies following participation in structured, non-credit co-curricular experiences.

Co-curricular experiences are activities, events, or programs that are not part of the formal academic curriculum. These activities are designed to enhance and enrich the overall learning experience of students beyond what they learn in the classroom.

CCMs are for Geneseo students who want to document completion of non-credit learning activities.

CCMs are made available through individual groups and departments; at this time, there is no comprehensive list of CCMs at Geneseo.
